If employee will be working a schedule other than Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, specify hours and days to be worked

Employee will be working on any or all three shifts including weekends and holidays. Days off will be determined by the shift supervisor.

Level I: Must be able to acquire knowledge of, and functionally operate police telecommunications equipment including 800 MHz/VHF/UHF radio equipment, telephone console, multiple desktop computers, CCTV control systems.

Level II: Must be able to functionally operate police communications equipment including 800 MHz/VHF/UHF radio equipment, telephone console, multiple desktop computer, CCTV control systems.

Experience and Other Skills Required

Level I:
Must possess the physical ability to hear ordinary telephone conversation and visually see written paper documents and electronic visual display (computer monitor).

Experience in communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Criminal background check and thorough background investigation to include drug screen testing, polygraph and psychological exam.

After employment, pass a licensing exam after successful completion of training for a Police Telecommunications Operator TCOLE Course #1013 as mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement must be completed, within the first 12 months of employment, by employees not possessing the following current certifications: TCOLE Basic Telecommunications License; TCIC/NCIC Full Access Operator certification, and TCIC/NCIC Basic Procedures course #3811. Must also complete TCOLE course #2120, Crisis Communication within the first 12 months of employment.

TCIC/TLETS training courses must be completed within six months from date of assignment.

Position requires the ability to function during stressful situations commonly associated with police operations.

Must possess the ability to perform multiple functions at one time.

Must be able to work on any assigned shift, with varying days off.

Level II:
Two years of experience in police communications with a law enforcement agency or equivalent.

TCOLE Intermediate Telecommunicator Proficiency Certificate.

Criminal Background Check and thorough background investigation to include a polygraph exam, psychological exam and drug screen testing.

Must pass an approved proficiency examination administered by the Director of Police or his/her designee.

Demonstrate human relations and effective verbal and written communication skills.

Must possess the physical ability to hear ordinary telephone conversations and visually see written paper documents and electronic visual display (computer monitor).

Position requires the ability to function during stressful situations commonly associated with police operations.

Must possess the ability to perform multiple functions at one time.

Must be able to work on any assigned shift, with varying days off.

Description of Job Duties

Must be able to think and act promptly in emergencies, to analyze a situation quickly and accurately and to take or suggest an effective course of action.

Operate police radio console; maintain computerized records of incoming calls for assistance; dispatch officers to situations requiring police response; contact and coordinate response by EMS and Fire department, maintain computerized records of all police/patrol activities; monitor CCTV systems.

Complete required reports; communicate with other police/fire/ambulance agencies. Operate various computer terminals including the Computer Aided Dispatch system, TLETS/NLETS, TCIC/NCIC (DPS), DSX Access Control, Complete View CCTV control, GCC Fire Alarm monitoring, E911 Emergency call system, AudioLog digital recorder, Giant Voice mass notification system.

Conduct arrest warrant and criminal history checks via TLETS/NLETS. Conduct driver’s license and vehicle registration checks via TLETS/NLETS/MVD.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Test and assure that all telecommunication center equipment is functional and notify the duty supervisor when repair is needed or malfunctions occur.

Entry level Police Telecommunicator applicants must successfully complete a Public Safety Telecommunication Test.

In addition to completing the Basic Telecommunicator Certification Course (1013) and Crisis Communications (2120), individuals taking the licensing exam will be required to complete the TCOLE Rule Overview Course (1305) available on the TCOLE learning website, prior to examination.

The applicant will be required to complete but is not limited to the following steps in the application process:

The applicant must be fingerprinted using the Fingerprint Applicant Services of Texas (FAST) and subjected to a search of local, state and U.S. national records and fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.

The applicant must meet the requirements of a thorough, comprehensive background investigation conducted by the institution’s police department.

The applicant must successfully complete an oral board interview.

The applicant is required to take and pass a polygraph examination.

The applicant must be examined by a physician.

The applicant must be examined by a psychiatrist or psychologist, selected by the institution police department.

Costs of the tests will be paid by the Police Department.

Must successfully complete a minimum six-month probationary period.
