Pathology Laboratories is seeking a full-time Medical Technologist I to join the Laboratory of Clinical Genomic Medicine. The Laboratory of Clinical Genomic is a state-of-the-art clinical laboratory powered by next-generation sequencing (NGS) based technology along with other technology platforms for high throughput genomic analysis.
The laboratory is focused on diagnostic clinical oncology with a goal to optimize and validate NGS-based assays as diagnostic tools for cancer and other human genetic disorders.
The ideal candidate for this position would be self-motivated, well-organized, and reliable. Works under direct supervision, develops skills and learns concepts in sequencing data gathering and analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity.
This position will focus on three major areas: 1) clinical diagnostic testing which includes DNA sequence data analysis from high-complexity tests such as the solid tumor sequencing panel, the hematologic malignancies sequencing panel, and clinical exome sequencing; 2) perform variant curation and interpretation, develop protocols for variant curation and classification; and 3) participate in new test developments and clinical research projects.
Job Responsibilities
· Follows written CLIA-lab procedures for correct handling and processing of specimens
· Performs lab procedures of moderate and high complexity in accordance with standards set forth in the laboratory
· Manipulate and operate simple and complex laboratory equipment including computers and sequencers; perform maintenance and limited tear down and replacement of parts of laboratory equipment; problem-solve equipment malfunctions
· Knowledge in molecular biology related protocols (including DNA/RNA preparation and quantification, hybridization, PCR, multiplex amplification, Next Generation Sequencing required)
· Solid understanding of genetics, NGS technology, and statistics
· Data analysis including scripting, programming, statistical analyses
· Performs molecular tests according to SOP for diagnostic and research samples
· Performs data gathering and downstream data processing and bioinformatics analysis
· Maintains and operates laboratory equipment and maintains lab inventory
· Assists in the orientation and training of new employees. Participates in the training of technical staff and monitors their progress with supervisor
