Job Description

This position, reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, is responsible for executing design, development and manufacturing of robust utility products meeting customer requirements. The position supports senior design leads, both employees and contractors, with detailed design, manufacturing process definition and vendor coordination. This position will include production of prototypes using multiple manufacturing methods and benchtop studies. Direct involvement with qualification testing will be required. This position will include direct contact with customers and suppliers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design Engineering

Working in a team environment, the mechanical engineer will produce detailed designs of components meeting customer requirements for long life in severe outdoor conditions. Frequent and regular communication with design leads and management are expected including informal conversations and formal presentations. Production components will include polymers and metals and will include machining, molding, sheet metal forming and coating processes.

  • Design Prototype Fabrication and Test

Produce prototype components for evaluation using inside tools and outside vendors. Expected processes include rapid prototype machines of various styles, machined parts, molded parts and stock components. Perform in-house benchtop evaluations for form and function and coordinate outside testing as necessary. Present results in a standardized format to management.

  • Vendor Relations

Develop and execute manufacturing plans and maintain direct communication of manufacturing related vendors. Travel to vendor sites for vendor selection, component evaluation, first run trials, audits as directed by company management.

  • Documentation Management

Directly manage engineering documentation management following company guidelines and train technical staff on methods of search and retrieval.

  • Process Equipment Management

Actively manage company test and process equipment within the laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • BS/MS in Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • 5 years in mechanical device design
  • 2 years direct experience with the design of outdoor equipment
  • Skilled in the use of 3D design software such as SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrated ability to design small robust components for outdoor severe service.
  • Demonstrated ability to design for economical manufacturability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work toward goals with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a team environment.
  • Previous experience transferring product to manufacturing
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written
