The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Urban Forestry Program assists both localities and citizens in making science-based decisions about tree care and urban forest stewardship. The Urban Forestry Program advocates the role of trees as a critical part of the urban infrastructure. Because urban and community forestry is multi-disciplinary, the program relies on partnerships and expertise throughout Extension and across the Commonwealth. The Urban Forester Extension Associate engages in integrated urban forest management and education through the care and management of tree populations in urban settings for the purpose of improving the urban environment. The Urban Forester Extension Associate is responsible for providing impact-driven, research-based extension and educational programs for a diverse group including adult and youth citizens, municipalities, organizations, and other stakeholders in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The incumbent in this role will provide day-to-day leadership concerning urban forest environments, will work with faculty and Extension staff to design and implement scientific research projects related to management of trees and tree habitats in urban and suburban spaces, and will coordinate and implement educational programs about arboriculture and urban forestry; will provide consultation for the management of public and private urban forested areas for economic, recreation, conservation and ecological purposes as needed or requested; and will seek out and prepare proposals for program funding as needed. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance of program participation records and related statistical information for program evaluation purposes. Extension Associates are responsible for engaging in professional activities related to research in their disciplines, effective teaching, and significant service to the University, profession, students and the community.
Minimum Qualifications Considerable knowledge of arboricultural practices and techniques. Considerable knowledge and understanding of urban forest issues and policies in the Mid-Atlantic. Demonstrated ability to design and implement research projects. Demonstrated ability to provide consultation for the management of public and private urban forested areas for economic, recreation, conservation and ecological purposes. Experience in extension-related work or public contact including teaching experience in either formal or non-formal settings. Acceptable verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate difficult concepts to diverse members of an audience. Self-motivated with an ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Demonstrated ability to implement and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Workable skills in the use of information technology and its appropriate and effective use in the development and delivery of educational programs. Knowledge of and competencies in the use of social media as a communication tool is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be committed to working with a diverse clientele, and demonstrate some experience working with such audiences. Preferred Qualifications Graduate Degree in Horticulture or in a related discipline. Certified Arborist preferred. Past experience working as an urban forester. Some experience preparing proposals for program funding.
