Directly supervise entry level staff, volunteers and the operations of a library branch and provide performance feedback

Provide advanced information services to library customers through reference interviews, research and bibliographic instruction which require a broad knowledge of print, non-print and electronic resources. Promote the library's collection and services through programs and other activities

As a member of the branch management team, you will mentor, train, coach branch staff, volunteers, and library assistants with respect to providing quality customer service, to improve performance and using library resources. Maintain the safety and security of the facility for staff and customers. Use creative problem-solving techniques to interpret, explain, and apply library policy and procedures to respond to the concerns of internal and external customers

Prepare monies for library opening and closing. Resolve problems concerning cash and credit transactions. Prepare and review reports for reconciliation of cash transactions

Working with teams/groups in a team environment

Will directly assist customers and visitors

Evaluate and maintain branch-level materials in support of system-wide collection. Identify needs of library customers and ensure a balanced collection by recommending the purchase of materials and collaboratively performing inventory, weeding, and redistribution of materials

Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot technology for the public and staff

Respond to readers’ advisory inquiries and complex reference questions by using interview techniques and researching library resources. Help customers and staff access appropriate library resources, services, and technology

Support, participate in, and evaluate activities and services that advance the library’s mission and goals

Staff and maintain all public service points and work stations as needed

May lead or participate in City and departmental teams to develop strategic plans, recruit staff, resolve problems, and improve processes

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires a combination of higher education and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years, one (1) of which was supervisory, in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, three (3) of which must be in the direct delivery of information services and associated with such positions as Library Program Specialist. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

Preferences:
  • 2 years’ experience of supervisory techniques and staff development practices
  • Experience with advanced research and reference interviewing techniques
  • Experience working with teams/groups in a team environment
  • Knowledge of library philosophies and practices
  • Experience operating library automated systems and other library equipment
  • 3 years direct customer service or information desk experience
  • Experience with print, non-print, and electronic resources
  • Experience maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting technology for the public and staff
  • Experience working with departmental teams to develop strategic plans, training, recruit staff, resolve problems, and
improving processes
