PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To learn the art and skill of pastoral care as a Clinical Pastoral Education student and to provide pastoral care as a Chaplain Resident member of the Pastoral Care Department
- Participate in all elements of the CPE Program
The Chaplain Resident will prepare for, attend and participate in individual and group supervision for all aspects of the CPE program including individual supervision sessions; verbatim sessions; Interpersonal Relations Group Sessions; Didactic sessions; and other curriculum items on the syllabus for the individual CPE unit. The CPE Resident will meet with her/his Mentor as required. The CPE Resident will participate in evaluation of each unit of CPE and will also participate in Program Evaluation meetings.
- Provide Direct Pastoral Care
The CPE Resident will be assigned two mentor rotations in the course and one in patient unit or to an area of specialization (second year resident) where he/she will be responsible to visit patients and families, make spiritual assessments, and work together with the interdisciplinary team in providing spiritual support and interventions. Pastoral Care will be noted in the patients' charts. The CPE Resident will learn to provide or provide pastoral support to staff members. The CPE Resident will provide call coverage as required.
- Develop a Written Contract for Learning
The CPE Resident will write learning goals consistent with the Outcomes of Level I or Level II CPE as stated in the Standards of the ACPE; the CPE Resident will define his/her learning goals based on feedback from supervisors and peers and emerging self-awareness. The CPE Resident will address these goals in individual and group supervision with CPE supervisors at Cincinnati Children's and with mentor.

- Pastoral identity/skills:
Addresses each of the Level I and selected Level II CPE Outcomes in the course of the year; Learning about each of the Common Standards for Professional Chaplaincy; Learning to do responsible self-care; Reference from someone in the Resident's faith group supporting the applicant's potential to participate in Clinical Pastoral Education.
Presents clinical work for feedback to peers and CPE supervisors; Defines goals for professional education; Learning to considers feedback non-defensively; Learning to incorporates feedback resulting in behavior change
- Excellent academic skills:
Expresses self well in writing; Continues education by reading relevant material
Articulates motivation to become a pastoral care provider in the area of specialization (if applicable); Able to distinguish pastoral care from pastoral counseling and from serving as a leader in a congregation.
Possess physical, mental and emotional stamina sufficient to remain alert for a 12-hour shift
- Completion of at least 2 years of graduate theological education-M.Div., MAHL, or equivalent degree for the applicant's faith tradition;
- Completion of 1 unit of CPE in ACPE accredited program OR 4 units for 2nd year residents
- Completion of a graduate degree in theology.
- Some chaplaincy experience in 2nd Year CPE Residency specialization if applicable
