Red Carrot is seeking a Communications Specialist to join a team supporting our federal government client. The associate will be supporting efforts to build a Climate-Ready Nation. They will assist our federal government client in creating and developing communications, outreach tools, and products to help the public better understand the agency’s core missions and science. Work is primarily remote, but some meetings may be required in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, Maryland.
Responsibilities

Develop public relations communications products and targeted outreach campaigns for specific audiences such, as regional and national media as well as specific stakeholder groups interested in science and climate-change issues.

Research, gather, and synthesize scientific and policy information, and translate that information into understandable, audience-appropriate communication products (e.g., news releases, web feature stories, talking points, etc.),

Draft and implement long-range communications plans related to key client priorities to help coordinate messaging to target specific audiences across offices and programs.

Draft and clear talking points and communications memos to help managers and scientists convey complex information to non-technical audiences so they can more easily understand the key messages of the material.

Review and edit staff-written news releases, web stories, and other web content to help ensure scientific accuracy and plain language readability. Shepherd the material through multiple clearance stages and reconcile edits throughout the process.

Plan, prepare remarks for experts, and run online webinars and in-person presentations to public and media audiences designed to promote science, climate literacy, and awareness of where / how to find/use data and information for more informed decision-making.

Help organize and run stakeholder meetings and live and virtual engagements for specific initiatives across the agency. Including facilitating workshops, town halls, and meetings with various target audiences and partner organizations to promote information exchange and to engage for specific initiatives across the agency.

Qualifications

Must have bachelor’s degree with a major in English or Journalism

The ability to successfully organize, prioritize, and manage multiple concurrent projects

5+ years of experience in communications
-
5+ years of experience in science writing and editing
-
Proven experience writing and editing in accordance with Associated Press style guide
-
Must demonstrate strong writing and editing skills and have experience translating complex scientific information for non-scientific audiences

Proficient in Office 365
