The Legislative Affairs Specialist is part of the Office of Government Relations which falls within DC Health’s Office of the Director. The purpose of this position is to advance DC Health’s policy priorities through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. This position works across a diverse array of public health program areas and serves as a convener for policy development and analysis across the Department. This position represents DC Health to external stakeholders including the District of Columbia Council and other District Government agencies.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent serves as a vital member of the Office of Government Relations and supports with a diverse array of legislative and policy inquiries. The incumbent is responsible for conducting research and developing analyses related to public health policy, health equity, and other social determinants of health. The incumbent supports the Office of Government Relations by addressing requests from the District of Columbia Council and the Executive Office of the Mayor. The incumbent produces a variety of written materials on behalf of the Department, including policy briefs, legislative testimony, and fact sheets. The incumbent conducts data analysis for relevant legislation, including the tracking of District and Federal legislation. The incumbent supports the Office of Government Relations and subject matter experts with the development of public health policy proposals. The incumbent will support DC Health in preparation, during, and following legislative hearings or other relevant proceedings. The incumbent will maintain relationships with elected officials, stakeholders, and interested parties.
Qualifications and Education
Required Qualifications: Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade (12) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Preferred skills and experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's or master’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related field is preferred. Experience working with either state or federal legislators is also preferred.

The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.
