The Medical Assistant will provide basic supportive primary health care services and will provide clerical support and interpreter services as needed. The MA will work under the direct supervision of the clinic director and assistant director. The MA will utilize Athena, our electronic medical record.
In the first 90 days, the Medical Assistant will:
Learn and live the Americares values.
Complete all require new hire onboarding trainings.
Verbalize understanding of the free clinic model.
Complete Learning Modules for Athena
Learn procedures and perform patient vitals/history and prep patient for visit.
Thoroughly and accurately document both new patient intake and returning patient visit.
Learn procedure to collect lab specimens, properly perform skill and follow QA guidelines
Scheduling patient appointments for onsite care and offsite referrals. Assist front desk as needed.
Learn proper phone etiquette, answer phones, make reminder calls and identify need for nursing intervention.
Shadow experienced interpreter to learn how to properly interpret.
Review and verbalize understanding of safety plan for clinics.
Begin training on Retina Vue screening device
In the first 6 months, the Medical Assistant will:
Be able to interpret skillfully and demonstrate proper patient interpretation skills.
Demonstrate proper PPE, standard precautions and infection control procedures.
Demonstrate proper Point of Care testing and EKG procedures.
Demonstrate ability to explain procedures to patients.
Demonstrate proficiency with EHR; able to update patient records for patient intake and check-in procedures.
Demonstrate understanding of proper resource utilization, knowledge of when a nurse or provider needs to be involved.
Demonstrate skill with consistent Retina Vue eye screening camera shots
Independently teach patients how to use glucometer, home blood pressure monitoring equipment and train for other medical procedures such as FIT test
Assist with clinic preparedness including inventory/stock levels and retrieving test results for chart preparation.
In the first year, the Medical Assistant will:
Demonstrate proficiency in entire process for prepping a patient for their visit, including vital signs, Athena check-in, POC, EKG.
Be able to confidently assist and support the provider during the visit.
Demonstrate mastery of EHR and able to document and update patient charts.
Be proficient in daily clinic workflows/procedures.
Demonstrate proficiency in testing patients’ eyes with Retina Vue device.
As part of medical team, participate in quality improvement, flow improvements and adapt to change as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare patients for examinations, including but not limited to, obtaining medical and social history, explaining medical procedures, collecting laboratory specimens, and taking electrocardiograms.
These competencies are required for the role:
You have 3-5 years of Medical Assistant experience or have completed an accredited Medical Assistant program and have 1-3 years of Medical Assistant experience.
Experience working with adults with chronic health conditions
Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Portuguese
Excellent clinical skills
Proven ability to work compassionately in a fast-paced medical environment with a vulnerable patient population.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal.
US work authorization is required for this role.
