For over 35 years, Capital Impact Partners has been a nonprofit mission driven lender that has supported the development of low-income underserved communities nationwide, focusing in five key sectors - health care, education, healthy foods, housing and aging. Capital Impact is also supporting the redevelopment of Detroit through multiple partnerships with banks and foundations.

The Food & Co-op intern will support the strategy and innovation work at Capital Impact, including market research, portfolio and impact data analysis, meeting facilitation and note-taking. The intern will also support the development and implementation of Capital Impact’s activities focused on cooperative development and impact, including industry research, market analysis and program design. The intern will provide additional support for research and dissemination of trends in key industries for Capital Impact through the knowledge management platforms of the organization.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy and Innovation:
The intern will support the organization’s strategy and innovation work in coordination with other members of the Equity & Impact team and other organization staff
Support innovation work by conducting market research for new programs and market sectors, research on key industries and disseminating industry knowledge
Produce reports and presentations for internal staff
Maintain knowledge repository of articles, links, and papers in priority sectors for Capital Impact

Food and Cooperative Development Initiatives:
The intern will contribute to the organization’s work in supporting food systems and cooperative development in the food, worker, and housing sectors. In addition, the intern will support impact measurement efforts
Conduct research as needed in co-op sectors including food co-ops in low income communities and housing co-ops
Assist in co-op community of practice meetings by taking notes, disseminating agenda and meeting materials
Support research and development of new initiatives, programs, or policy that advances more inclusion within food systems in the organization’s core geographies

Assist in programmatic development and research for worker co-op conversions and a national home care cooperative replication initiatives

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program

Undergraduate and Graduate students welcome

Working knowledge of the community development industry
Understanding of the cooperative model is a plus in particular in the worker and food co-ops sectors
Familiarity of food systems considered a plus
Interest in impact measurement
Strong written and analytical skills
Highly accountable, detail-oriented, and organized, demonstrating an ability to meet deadlines and achieve goals, and the willingness to play a range of roles
Collaborative and flexible, with the ability to collaborate with a wide range of internal and external partners and the willingness to play a range of roles as the project warrants
Ability to work independently and prioritize competing requests in a fast-paced, growing organization
Knowledge of and a passion to learn about the cooperative model, food, worker ownership, and housing to support low income people is preferred
