General Summary of Position:
Responsible for directing and evaluating the Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician Assistant (PA) staff of the Transplant inpatient unit. Acts as the primary resource for NPs'/PAs' daily functions. Functions to coordinate and formalize a multidisciplinary structure and process that ensures accountability for specific patient care outcomes through assessment, planning, coordination, and referral of services within specific time frames. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, utilizing clinical outcome data to support innovative and cost-effective changes to practice and to the healthcare system. The functions of expert practice, consultation, professional development, research, and leadership are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Functions as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the Department of Transplant Surgery to provide comprehensive care to a designated patient population. Coordinates and communicates all aspects of care with patient/family and the healthcare team. Coordinates activities with the attending physician as assigned. Assists in communications with referring physicians and patients, triages patients and patient issues, and ensures monitoring and confirmation of service delivery and evaluation of healthcare services for patients and patient families.

EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: BSN from an accredited school of nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: State license in D.C., MD or VA as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. CPR certification. Certification in ACLS and PALS.
EXPERIENCE: Four years of nursing experience inclusive of at least one year of directly-related experience in orthopedics. 1 year of supervisory experience required.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain and control standards. Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Responsible (directly or through delegation to other staff members) for the personnel managementof the NPs and PAs in the Transplant Inpatient Unit. This will include, but is not limited to, interviewing, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees as delegated by or with the Administrator's approval.
Records and documents assessment data, interventions, results, and patient outcomes per established clinical protocols
Instructs patients and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides patient education and serves as resource to other clinical team members regarding particular expertise
Serves to problem solve; focusing on operational issues that may impede patient outcomes in a timely manner.
