Responsible for supporting product integration and operations in the area of sterilization.

Irradiation Operator Certification

Associates degree not required but preferred


AAMI/ISO/ASTM Radiation Sterilization Standards (preferred)

Dose mapping of products in radiation fields such as Irradiator Production Loop(s) and Research Loop(s) (required)

Management of processing irradiation requests of non-saleable material (required)

Communication with customer to evaluate dose range requirements, purchase orders, shipping instructions and other requests details

Preparation of irradiation parameters for material

Coordination and execution of irradiation of material

Review irradiation record to ensure dose requirements are met

Coordination of quality release and shipment of material

Alanine/EPR dosimetry system(s) understanding (preferred)


Calibration verification


Microbiological procedures related to sterilization process validation (preferred)

Organizational / planning skills / Interpersonal / communication skills (required)

Thorough knowledge of and be able to apply/use the above skill set (required)

Able to deal with abstract and complex “cause and effect” relationships and make sound decisions, often with limited data, which impact products and facilities (required)


Basic word processing and spreadsheet skills using standard IBM software. (required)


Three or more years’ experience in which proficiency in medical device sterilization has been demonstrated.

Sufficient experience and training in radiation sterilization to coordinate appropriate irradiation , needing only occasional guidance from a more experienced sterilization scientist on unusual or especially difficult problems. (required)

Able to work effectively in a team environment, make effective management level presentations and write formal reports. (required)

Training and experience in Good Manufacturing Practices and ISO 9001. (required)

Ensure contractors meet sterilization policy requirements.

Work on projects of various size and complexity, primarily on high impact complex projects.

Coordinate irradiation exposure of samples to support teams.

Determine appropriate DDS strategies for complex product orientations.

Support dose mapping execution activities.

Coordinate irradiation of calibration studies.

Analyze dosimeter calibration data from internal studies and external suppliers.

Troubleshoot sterilization process deviations; develop short & long term solutions to prevent reoccurrence.

Follow all company safety policies and other safety precautions within the work area.

Promote safety to all associates that enter the work area.

Set standards for safe behavior. Recognize and reward safe behavior in others.

Enforce safety policies and procedures. Ensure that direct reports employ safe practices.

Evaluate safety performance and insure that safety is a part of each staff member’s GPMS.

Report to more experienced Sterilization Scientist(s).

Other responsibilities may be assigned and not all responsibilities listed may be assigned.

Environmental – Participate in EMS management structure toward implementation and maintenance of EMS including continual improvement; pollution prevention; objectives and targets; and regulatory compliance. Participate and support the ISO 14001 Certification and Regulatory Audit process. Implement and follow all applicable EMS procedures. Adhere to the site’s EHS Code of Conduct.

POST HIRE TRAINING PLAN REQUIREMENTS:Maintain adherence to position training curriculum.

Office deskwork, requiring sitting, walking, using the phone and computer, may lift up to 30 lbs. occasionally.

Long walking, standing, bending, stooping and reaching.

Public speaking, visual assessment of facilities and products and ability to respond to visual and safety alarms.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Radiation Processing Environments.

Indirectly supervise technical personnel either reporting full time or on temporary assignment to facilitate sterilization validations, troubleshooting or sterilizer operations.

Travel may be required.
