Graduate-level Summer Internship May – August 2019 in the Data Science division of our Analytic Enablement organization of Highmark Health.
SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has the goal of providing the opportunity to acquire practical experience through direct exposure to the related business line(s) and to develop the next generation of diverse business professionals. To that end, the program will provide hands-on training and experience in the business line, expose the various career opportunities in the business line and related areas, and prepare participants for positions in the business.
Typical responsibilities include:
Provide analytic and consultative support to a broad spectrum of internal customer areas and external business partners.
Determine how decision support systems will provide information required to make effective business decisions, translates requirements into applications that employ appropriate decision support and reporting tools.
Use broad experience and technical knowledge to propose solutions to complex business problems.
Drive the implementation of the recommended solutions.
Define issues and ideas to be studied as well as the approach (methodological and technical) to be used in addressing studies and projects.
Create and/or develop new methods of analysis, database design and performance measurement or, in some cases, adaptation of existing solutions to new areas.
Perform modeling of data sources and flows, works with data management staff to define an operational framework that will define, develop and implement policies and security frameworks to ensure precise and secure deliver of knowledge and information.
Provide assistance and depending on skill and experience, lead with interpretation of raw data, statistical results or otherwise compiled information, identify follow-up action items and prepare or assist in the preparation of written reports and/or oral presentation of findings to internal and external audiences, customer managers, clinical staff, compliance agencies, group accounts, providers, agent plans, and brokers.
Develop and maintains moderate- to extremely-complex computer programs using 4GL programming languages (such as SAS, R, SQL) and other database technology (DB2, Teradata, and Oracle).
Other duties as assigned or requested.
Pursuance of a graduate degree full or part-time in an accredited college or university.
An advanced degree in or related to Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science.
Strong technical and programming skills with experience in Python, R, shell scripting, Spark, or similar.
Familiarity with data visualization techniques and tools like Tableau, D3, Matplotlib, ggplot, plotly etc.
Familiarity with prototyping apps in Shiny, Flask, etc.
Familiarity with statistical and machine learning techniques as it applies to real world problems. Some examples include Hypothesis testing, Power analysis, Regression, Classification, Clustering, Recommendation Engines, etc.
Must be proficient using large and complex databases, ideally in an HDFS environment. Familiarity with Map Reduce, Hive, etc. would be a plus.
Strong communication skills. Must be comfortable presenting findings and offering recommendations to senior management.

5. As specifically requested by management, conducts research and reporting inclusive of recommendations or alternative proposals for action.
6. Undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
7. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
