Currently we are seeking a Vice President, Controller to join our team and support the work in our corporate offices in Reston and Lorton, Virginia.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the VP Controller is to ensure outstanding quality and cost-effectiveness of all transactional accounting and treasury operations through technology, continuous improvement, best practices and data-driven management. This position is a process owner and will have responsibility for aligning all technical accounting, policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
The VP Controller reports to the CFO and will manage a staff of 6. The primary responsibility of this role is to run the day-to-day accounting & treasury operations of the company including:
Lead monthly close process across the enterprise and prepare timely consolidating and consolidated GAAP financial statements. Produce quarterly external financial statements and debt-covenant compliance reports for main creditor.
Produce timely, monthly non-GAAP financial metrics and KPIs for the Board of Directors and Senior Management.
Identify and lead development/creation of new reports and information to support existing and emerging business requirements.
Manage the treasury process across the enterprise to ensure a current view of liquidity and working capital needs. Manage payables and receivables to acceptable levels.
Review accounting pronouncements and make certain that GAAP accounting is followed.
Assist the CFO with special projects including due diligence, acquisition integration and ad hoc financial analysis, as required.
Help develop and implement the vision for the Accounting function.
Play a leadership role in evaluating the adequacy of the existing accounting system, as well as, modification of that system to suit the business or, if necessary, implement a new accounting system.
Implement changes required to align the business with bank credit agreement requirements.
Drive performance against applicable management metrics and continuously improve the record-to-report processes, including shortening the existing closing schedule.
Ensure a rigorous financial controls environment within the business to maintain compliance with current and anticipated legal and regulatory requirements.
Establish new policies and procedures across the combined enterprise and improve existing policies and procedures as required.
Establish and maintain accurate and up-to-date desk level procedures and ensure teams follow operational procedures that provide control and operational flexibility and appropriately protect the company’s assets.
Regularly assess the current team to determine if staffing levels and skill sets are appropriate. Hire and develop high performing accounting & finance professionals as needed.
Build a culture of high performance, healthy collaboration and rapid development by setting high expectations for staff, providing opportunities for development, and personally providing feedback and coaching to teammates.
Establish and maintain key stakeholder relationships (internal and external) in order to pro-actively manage organization performance and resolve escalated and systemic issues.
Technical Requirements (required and desired)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with strong financial background
10+ years of experience managing a client-service oriented accounting function with experience in management of company initiatives/projects, strategic thinking, relationship management, financial budgets and processes and recruiting/developing/coaching employees
Experience with Big Four type companies is preferred
Experience in leading change to achieve process excellence and performance improvement
Strong leadership and negotiating skills with the ability to lead from the front.
Ability to evaluate, understand and problem solve issues with the ability to make complex ideas or situations clear, simple and easy to understand.
Exceptional communication skills – both written and verbal.
Able to work effectively at all levels in an organization and to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal.
