Part-Time Lecturer(s) in Communication

The University of Colorado at Denver Department of Communication invites applications for part-time, non-tenure-track teaching positions at the International College of Beijing (ICB) for Fall of 2018. The position(s) will commence in Beijing on September 13, 2018 and end on December 21, 2018.
The Department seeks lecturers to fill three openings in our Fall offerings, including teaching COMM 2020 Communication and Citizenship (M/W 8-9:50 am), COMM 3271 Communication & Diversity (T/R 8-9:50 am), and COMM 4270 Intercultural Communication (T/R 10:10-12 noon).
About the ICB:
Located in the Haidian District of Beijing, the International College Beijing (ICB) is a 24-year-old international, joint educational partnership between the China Agricultural University (CAU) and the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) that offers complete undergraduate programs in Economics and Communication. All courses are administered and taught by CU Denver faculty in English, and the degree earned is awarded by CU Denver. Above all else, we seek a dynamic and charismatic teacher(s) committed to best practices in global education, one who will use active and experiential learning to engage students, as well as provide clear assignments, compelling lectures, and detailed assessment rubrics.
English is the required language for instruction, office hours, and instructor-student communication.
Lecturers and instructors are expected to incorporate Department learning outcomes into their course design and assignments/assessments and are responsible for all classroom management responsibilities for their course or courses, ranging from creative lesson planning through timely and transparent grading through holding regular office hours and engaging in ongoing communication with students.

Semesters are based on the lunar calendar with fall semesters beginning early to mid-September. Chinese national holidays and required class make-up days must be observed in accordance with China’s Ministry of Education requirements.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in China and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire (see note below regarding Chinese citizens).
Faculty hired to teach at ICB must be able to meet the requirements to obtain the Z Visa to work in China (http://english.gov.cn/services/workinchina/); our understanding of these requirements include holding a Master’s degree or above, demonstrating at least 2-years teaching experience, and holding a graduate degree that matches the area that the applicant will teach. Under these Chinese rules, the maximum age of candidates seeking a work Visa is 59. These requirements are subject to change by the Chinese government without notice.
The University does not have direct authority to hire Chinese citizens working in China.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is typically $5,000 USD per course for part-time instruction. Part-time lecturers are not benefits eligible. This position or positions are for the fall 2018 term only.
Please note: if we find one qualified candidate available to teach all three open classes, there is the potential for the position to become full-time and benefits-eligible for the fall term only, with a round trip ticket to and from the US to Beijing and free housing in the guest house (pending availability) or the option of renting a subsidized university apartment, as well as the University’s standard benefits package.

An M.A. in Communication, Mass Communication, or Media Studies, or an M.A. in an allied field with at least 18 credits of graduate level Communication coursework; 2 years teaching experience, and demonstrated excellence in teaching classes that match all or some of the entries on the list of courses noted above.
A Ph.D. in Communication or a closely allied field, such as journalism or mass communication. Preference is for an individual who has experience teaching in an international setting and a personal and scholarly interest in diverse cultures. Fluency in or the desire to learn Mandarin is valued, but the ability to teach courses in English is required.
