UIC Campus COVID-19 Student Contact Tracing Team
The Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health is seeking multiple graduate hourly students to assist with the University’s efforts to combat COVID-19 through effective, timely, and empathetic contact tracing. The Campus COVID-19 contact tracer is responsible for performing the initial interview of campus persons (students, staff, faculty) with probable or confirmed COVID-19 infection to gather information necessary for public health case investigation and contact tracing. These efforts are essential to ensure a safe environment through the isolation and quarantine of persons infected with, or exposed to, COVID-19. To accomplish this, UIC will hire, train and deploy a team of COVID-19 contact tracers. The contact tracer will maintain contact with students diagnosed with COVID-19, determine exposure, assess symptoms, refer for testing according to established protocols, and provide them with instructions for isolation or quarantine. The contact tracer will maintain ongoing communication with contacts to assess symptoms, ensure compliance with quarantine and determine social support needs and/or handle reporting of issues that arise. Candidates must have ready access to high-speed internet to support remote work. Candidates will have to complete a contract tracing training course.
Interview persons (cases) diagnosed with COVID-19 infection in order to gather information about symptoms, exposures, and contacts (i.e. persons the case has been in contact with while potentially infectious).
Provide the case with information about COVID-19 illness and methods of disease prevention and control.
Assess the capability of cases to comply with isolation protocols and identify types of support they may need during their period of isolation.
Identify cases that meet high-risk criteria for severe outcomes and make sure that they check in with their health providers. Cases without health care providers should be referred to the infectious disease physician group for advice and if appropriate, additional intervention.
Quickly get in touch with contacts of diagnosed patients through text, e-mail, phone calls and other platforms when necessary.
Communicate with contacts in a professional and empathetic manner maintaining emotional and cultural awareness.
Provide contacts with approved information on quarantine procedures, what to do if symptoms develop and if they develop symptoms, refer them to testing.
Assign risk category depending on the contact’s underlying medical conditions, occupation, living situation and level of contact with case and understand protocol for each risk category
Systematically collect and record information in a local database.
Communicate with your team and supervisor when contact cannot be made with an individual and understand the best way to address the problem
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. These may include doing COVID educational outreach to students on campus, promotion of influenza vaccination, and assisting in the COVID testing program.
Enrolled student at UIC.
Bachelor’s degree in public health, health sciences, or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Excellent communication and organizational skills, and attention to detail
Ability to interact appropriately and effectively with a wide range of individuals
Superior skill in planning, organizing, and time management.
Computer skills are necessary and should include the ability to access and navigate various databases and software programs following training
Equally comfortable working individually and within a team environment that emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in a dynamic health sciences College.
Anticipated Hours Per Week: 20 hours/week
Rate of pay: $26.43/hour
