As a Senior Life Underwriter, you have the responsibility of underwriting individual life insurance applications up to $5,000,000 up to age 85 on a cross functional underwriting team. In the underwriting capacity you have the responsibility to evaluate risk to determine individual’s insurability adhering to medical & financial underwriting guidelines.
Evaluates and handles all underwriting aspects of formal & informal life insurance applications
Underwrites cases with a graduated amount limit up to $2,000,000 to age 70 with less than 5 years underwriting experience and up to $5,000,000 to age 85 with 5 years or more of underwriting experience
Identifies trends and issues and offers the best underwriting solutions
Provides second signature review
Works on assigned projects pertaining to underwriting and enterprise initiatives
Understanding of sales themes and concepts of varying levels of complexity
Understand underwriting policies, guidelines, practices and procedures, and has the ability to influence and champion changes to improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations
Responsible for technical underwriting knowledge of the Swiss Re underwriting manual
Interprets documents such as policies, proposals, claims and financial reports
Interacts with customers to enhance relationships
Demonstrates the ability to adapt and customize content and communication style to fit a variety of specific external and internal target audiences such as: agents, brokers, distribution partners, and all levels of employees
Demonstrates dependability, flexibility and sound judgment by adhering to schedules and meeting all productivity, quality and performance standards as well as taking ownership for your actions
Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background.
Collaborates effectively with stakeholders to gather information necessary for decision making and to select profitable risks.
Represents the company by responding to questions during agency visits and developing relationships with agents and partners
Provides training to less experienced team members on underwriting procedures and guidelines
Enhances departmental outcomes by sharing knowledge with team members and providing advice on more complex underwriting determinations.
Communicates effectively with customers to facilitate placement of business
Undergraduate degree or 4+ years of comparable work experience
Industry Exams – ALU 101, 201, 202, & LOMA encouraged
EKG Certification preferred but not required
3 – 6+ years of experience in Underwriting Individual Life Insurance
Demonstrated Excellence in: Problem Solving / Analysis; Comprehension of Complex Information; Influencing Others; Risk Assessment; Demonstrated decision making using sound judgment; Negotiation Skills; Managing Conflict
Developed Skills in: analyzing and interpreting complex financial documents including profit/loss statements, income statements, and balance sheets
Developed Skills in: Estate Growth Calculations and Life Expectancy Calculations
Strong Written and Verbal Communication skills
Intermediate in: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
A demonstrated track record of working with minimal supervision, being a self-starter and working with others in a team environment
