Maintain necessary repairs and installations in the area of steel fabrication and erection of bridges and structures. Perform concrete work for the construction and repair of bridges and structures. Perform carpentry duties related to bridges, buildings and structures. Other duties include:

  • Cleans and prepares bridges, buildings, and structure surfaces for painting.
  • Assists with or leads safety inspections on bridges and structures.
  • Transfers and operates the full range of heavy equipment used by MnDOT.
  • Determine proper traffic control layout in accordance with the Traffic Control Field Manual.
  • Determine equipment, tools, materials and supplies needed to complete assignment.
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control.
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment.
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup.
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
  • Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
  • Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Summer hours: Rochester and Winona are Monday – Thursday, 6:30 am – 5:00 pm.

Owatonna is Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Winter hours: Snow & ice season are typically Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, or a snow and ice shift, 12:00 am – 12:00 pm (A shift) or 12:00 pm – 12:00 am (B shift). During snow & ice operations employees are split into an A and B shift and will receive 8-hours of work or more depending on the length of the event. Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations and will include working nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one-hour of being called.

Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit with no Airbrake Restriction (written portion of the test only) at the time of the interview and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no Airbrake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire.

MnDOT will provide you with on-the-job training to assist you in taking the driving portion of the test to obtain your Class A CDL with no Airbrake Restriction.

Candidates that are offered positions, successfully pass pre-employment processes and are placed into positions will be required to attend Snowplow Operator Training in October at Camp Ripley (two-week training and returning home on weekends); the Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required for this training.

Minimum Qualifications for these positions:

Two years of experience performing carpentry OR concrete OR iron work OR a combination of one or more of these activities.

  • Some examples of carpentry may include: building construction; building repairs; or framing.
  • Some examples of concrete work may include: grading; bridge construction, repair and maintenance; or forming, placing and finishing concrete.
  • Some examples of iron work may include: structural steel erection; setting anchor bolts and inserts; gusset plate installation; placement of reinforcing steel or rebar; or rebar replacement.

Note: A Two year technical trades training or degree (e.g., carpentry, concrete/masonry, etc.) or equivalent may be substituted for one year of experience.
