The Nursing Assistant (NA) is assigned to the Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Portsmouth, NH. S/he is responsible for performing basic nursing care to support the Patient Care Aligned Team (PACT) in Veteran centered care.
The Nursing Assistant performs a variety of direct patient care and clerical support duties that facilitate the work of an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model for all clinics in the primary care setting. This position includes, but is not limited to, work that requires a practical knowledge of computerized data entry and information processing systems, setting priorities and deadlines, participating and providing input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings, performing nursing support and administrative follow up actions; evaluating patient information, educating providers about shared patients who may be receiving care at multiple VAs or in the community, the medical facility's organization and services, rules and regulations governing eligibility and treatment, practical knowledge of the standard procedures, medical records, medical terminology, security of sensitive electronic files, process improvement, and customer service.
Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: fielding telephone calls, ensuring timely communication to patient/staff; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility. The incumbent will maintain exam room supplies, request work orders; clean exam tables/supplies in-between patient appointments. Responsible for obtaining and assistance with obtaining laboratory specimens as needed to include phlebotomy and performing electrocardiograms. S/he performs vital signs for patients including pain scale, and enters into the electronic medical record.

b. Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the [NA] occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level) In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met for the GS 5 level:
(a) Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below;
(b) Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree;
(c) Demonstrated KSAs
1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

The majority of work is performed in an office setting. The work involves periods of moving about the unit and occasional transport of patients to other departments/areas such as radiology, phlebotomy/EKG areas. Work requires regular and recurring movement about the unit to different exam rooms to screen patient pre and post outpatient appointments. The work also requires moving and transporting of office supplies such as tablets, medical equipment, and paper products. The incumbent may be occasionally exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or procedures.
