Manager, Food Safety - Laboratory Support
This role supports the implementation and execution of key food safety design analytical methods within the US and Canada Zones by leading a team of Scientists for the hands-on execution of internal laboratory validation studies. Role includes reviewing and/or developing analytical methods needed to support food safety design and commercialization. The position ensures the support of HACCP plans and validation support to R&D and Corporate Quality & Food Safety.
Key Components of the role
Assists in design and personally conducts microbiological validation studies for various product categories, supporting Kraft Heinz innovation commercial projects. Studies include pathogen challenge studies and shelf life studies.
Participates in internal proficiency testing program and internal laboratory audit process for the Glenview microbiology laboratories.
Support validation of designed HACCP preventive controls (Cooking, formulation, etc.) and assess validity of data obtained by others, ensuring validation studies conducted apply to manufactured products.
Remain current in scientific and regulatory principles of food safety to ensure most relevant information and emerging issues are identified and incorporated into Kraft Heinz food safety programs.
Support the creation & maintenance of Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and other related laboratory processes & practices to ensure the proper operation of the laboratories.
Ensure the goals of the lab are established and met, including coordination of use of existing lab equipment (and space), care of lab equipment (and space), procurement of lab supplies, and coordination of collaborations with external laboratories. Responsible for smooth operation within the lab, including coordinating with other facility labs & facility management.
Master of Science degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field required. Ph.D. in Food Microbiology is preferred. Experience with Clostridium botulinum testing is preferred.
5-8 years of experience of relevant food microbiology laboratory work, including use of ISO, FDA/USDA/CFIA, AOAC microbiological methods. 3-5 years leading a team.
Prior HACCP certification preferred.
Knowledge and implementation of HACCP and Food Safety practices.
Significant experience with microbiology laboratory techniques and rapid test methods.
Competence in quality systems/processes (ISO, Six Sigma etc.), especially ISO 17025 requirements.
Competency with statistical experimental design and data analysis.
Excellent communication skills (presentation, report writing, teaching/training).
Work experience leading a team, working with team-oriented functions as well as individual contribution.
Action oriented with good project management skills.
Travel requirements up to 20% a year.
