The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
DEP’s Office of Environmental, Health and Safety, (OEHS) exist to ensure that DEP facilities sustain effective environmental, health and safety (EHS) compliance programs and to promote a safe and health workplace for DEP’s employees. To achieve this goal, the EHS Program Development of OEHS develops EHS policies and guidelines to ensure operational compliance with all applicable environmental, health and safety laws, rules, and regulations. The selected candidate will assist this division in serving the EHS needs of the Agency.
The EHS Performance Measurement and Strategic Planning (PMSP) Division is responsible for conducting agency level programmatic EHS assessments, compiling and presenting metrics (EHS performance) and spearheading strategic development and continuous improvement of the Agency-wide EHS Program. As part of this effort, the Division develops and maintains a comprehensive facility listing and schedule for upcoming EHS facility assessments; updates relevant policies and protocols. The Division also manages a database of findings that are generated from individual EHS facility assessments. As part of internal quality control and continual improvement effort, Division conducts EHS survey after individual EHS Assessment, then analyze responses, develop and implement recommendations, as part of the EHS survey review and analysis. The selected candidate will perform the following tasks: 1. Reviewing, consolidating and analyzing EHS survey submitted for 2019CY audit cycle and conduct presentation of the analysis result. 2. Providing general support and assistance with PMSP division initiatives in Policy development, planning targeted EHS assessments, researching and incorporating new techniques in current EHS assessment protocol, developing guidance(s)/checklists. 3. Providing general support and assistance with the ongoing development and implementation of the new software database system (e.g. preparing and reviewing written work flows for findings, report escalation procedures, correspondence on software implementation, etc.,). 4. Assist with routine unit activities of the PMSP Division, including EHS metrics review for QA/QC, regulatory research and report preparation and 5. Assists with the tracking of implementation of the Agency-wide strategic goal(s) (EHS). The intern will work under general guidance from the PMSP Director or Designee.
Minimum Qual Requirements
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
- Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the graduate level.
- Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
- Strong writing skills; effective interpersonal skills;
- Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software;
- Leadership skills; self-motivation; and ability to work well with minimal supervision.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
