The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) is looking for a combination System Administrator / Network Engineer to join a solid Information Technology team committed to providing exceptional service and support to the Society's staff, members, and guests. This position contributes to the success of the CZS mission by providing effective technical controls, processes, and documentation for all network, systems, and applications areas. It also ties to the continued success of the Zoo, the Society, and the IT Department by working closely with internal staff, departments and outside partners to deploy, maintain, and manage existing and future CZS networks and systems; and assist in establishing a continuous improvement culture in IT and at the Zoo. This includes carrying out, or assisting with, current and future IT projects related to network infrastructure refresh, cloud strategy, backup / disaster recovery, and network security from planning stage through implementation and post-project support.

Job duties and responsibilities include: Implement, test, and maintain technical controls, processes, and documentation supporting all CZS compliance and information security policies and practices for all network, systems, and applications areas. Provide third-tier technical support to support services staff. Perform administration and support of Cisco VoIP telephone system including unified messaging, emergency responder, and related systems. Perform server hardware and software installations, upgrades, patches, service packs, as necessary. Monitor server hardware and applications for continuous uptime. Manage VMWare cluster. Assess and recommend network architectural designs/changes in response to business or technical drivers. Actively participate in the planning, design, and implementation of server operating system configurations, network infrastructure, and related hardware.

Maintain, manage, configure and/or monitor:
  • Active Directory environment, including DNS and DHCP.
  • Network switches, firewalls, and other devices as necessary to ensure the performance of the entire network, including appropriate data cabling.
  • Storage-area-network infrastructure and backup system. Perform audits and validity tests as needed to assure recoverable backups.
  • O365 environment and SMTP gateway.
  • Wi-fi network and related systems.
  • Enterprise anti-virus system. Perform upgrades as necessary. Ensure protection from latest threats and vulnerabilities. Monitor and maintain web security proxy. Provide reports and perform audits as necessary.
  • IP video system including cameras, application, and storage performance.
Other related duties as assigned including but not limited to, reporting immediately to the V.P. of Information Technology and the V.P. of Human Resources any discovery of any illegal activities on any of the Society's electronic or information technology equipment in accordance with Society policy. Immediately report to the V.P. of Information Technology any activity or request for application or security updates or modifications that may violate current Society Policy, particularly as it relates to electronic communication or confidential information.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for this position include the following: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other relevant field or eight years’ equivalent experience required. Three years’ experience providing primary network system administration/engineering support for comparable-sized organization(s). Experience with managing Active Directory, O365, VMWare, SQL, backup/recovery, network security, SAN storage, network troubleshooting, and IP video. Experience with CISCO or Aruba network switches, wireless access points/controllers, firewalls, VPN, VoIP.

Must maintain confidentiality of information and respect customer privacy. Ability to work independently and with a team. Must have good communication and interpersonal skills. English fluency at a working professional proficiency required. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively resolve problems in a timely manner. Ability to work under pressure, prioritizes effectively, and meet critical deadlines. Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred qualifications include five years’ experience providing primary network system administration/engineering support for comparable-sized organization(s) is desired. Microsoft MCSE and/or CCNA, CCNP certification or equivalent highly preferred. Familiarity with network diagnostic devices and application software preferred but not required. Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
