Program Overview:

Rush University Medical Center, in partnership with Skills for Chicagoland’s Future and Malcolm X College has created an exciting opportunity for Chicago’s unemployed and underemployed youth to gain employment and education that prepares and qualifies them to apply for a Patient Care Technician (PCT) position at Rush. This fully-funded, 12-month program provides internal and external youth with the opportunity to obtain a Basic Nursing Assistant (BNA) certification through Malcolm X College and to partake in professional development experiences that will enable them to advance within the organization.

About Rush:

Rush is an academic health system whose mission is to improve the health of the people and the diverse communities it serves through the integration of outstanding patient care, education, and research and community partnerships. The Rush system comprises Rush University Medical Center, Rush University, Rush Copley Medical Center and Rush Oak Park Hospital, as well as numerous outpatient care facilities. Rush University, with more than 2,500 students, is a health sciences university that comprises Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and the Graduate College.

General Summary:

The Patient Services Assistant performs a variety of non-clinical and environmental tasks under the direction of the Unit Director. The Patient Services Assistant must demonstrate the ability to care for all patients and participate in weekly classroom education. The training and skill level of the Patient Services Assistant is the career path for the Patient Care Technician and Certified Nursing Assistant program. The Patient Services Assistant must also exemplify the Rush mission, values, and act in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Working at Rush:

Program participants will work at Rush in an entry-level, non-clinical role while completing an 8-week BNA certification program at Malcolm X College. Upon completion, participants will qualify to apply to clinical positions within the health system, including PCT vacancies.

In addition to earning their BNA certification, participants will receive training and professional development experiences that will introduce them to advanced career opportunities within the healthcare industry for individuals interested in returning to school to obtain a degree.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the non-clinical efforts of the floor staff
  • Responds to patient and guest inquiries and concerns by promptly communicating pertinent information to appropriate assigned staff
  • Stages patients rooms according to unit routine and standards
  • Maintains a safe and orderly, well equipment environment
  • Assists with organizing and restocking patient rooms and unit supplies
  • Serves as safety assistant (following internal training and competency check)
  • Supports day to day administrative tasks
  • Demonstrates a professional work style in interactions with internal and external customers
  • Provides excellent customer service to patients and families
  • Supports floor staff needs by answering telephone and responding to patient call system(s)

Program Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Acceptance into the Pivot to Success partnership program
  • Successful completion of internal and department screening/training
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to walk throughout Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift
  • Capability to interact effectively with others in difficult situations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a variety of tasks
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative and follow directions
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
