This position supports Zoo-wide conservation education by facilitating connections between Zoo guests, animals, and nature through dynamic experiences both on and off Zoo site. This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, and administrating fee-based and VIP guest experiences that could include (but are not restricted to) animal encounters, behind-the-scenes experiences, specialized tours, nature-based adventure, and conservation travel programs. This position is responsible for ensuring all experiences promote the importance of conservation, and the Minnesota Zoo’s mission of connecting people, animals and the natural world to save wildlife.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Develop and manage suite of mission-aligned unique experiences that engage Minnesota Zoo guests with the Zoo’s mission, nature, animals, and unique resources
Coordinate and implement Unique Experience programs ensuring internal cross-departmental needs are met
Integrate appropriate relevant conservation messaging and opportunities
Bachelor’s Degree in education, life science or related field
3 years of experience in revenue-driven innovative program design and development in an informal learning environment
2 years of practical experience with ambassador animal handling and/or training, including public engagement experiences
Proven success developing innovative strategies to meet revenue goals through new educational experiences in an informal institution
Experience building expense and revenue budgets, managing expenses and purchasing, and tracking revenue goals
Experience managing multi-department and/or organization-wide projects and initiatives
Experience managing and/or leading group travel sufficient to arrange and lead local, regional, and international conservation travel experiences for adults and youth
Experience developing and implementing evaluation tools and strategies to measure program effectiveness and impact
Demonstrated knowledge of and proven experience in environmental, experiential and/or outdoor learning theory and methodology
Knowledge of zoology, biology, life and environmental sciences, conservation, wildlife biology, and sustainability issues, including awareness of, sensitivity toward, and empathy with animals, their needs and their purpose on the earth
Evidence of exceptional interpersonal skills sufficient to develop and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders across multiple departments
Superior oral and written communication skills sufficient to develop and deliver education materials, group presentations, VIP engagements, and marketing tools and strategies.
Excellent interpretation, teaching, and presentation skills sufficient to deliver educational and engaging community outreach, public engagement, or educational programs in a non-formal environment
Ability to work with diverse populations
Current valid driver’s license
Significant experience working with teen, young adult, general adult, and senior audiences
Lead work or supervisory experience sufficient to provide direction to staff responsible for delivering Unique Experience programs
Experience designing and delivering animal and conservation-based programs specifically in a zoo environment
Fluent in a second language, such as Spanish, Hmong, ASL, etc.
TB and Rabies vaccinated and ongoing titer testing
Ability to stand for long periods of time and walk long distances on uneven terrain.
Ability to carry and use two-way portable radios to communicate with all zoo staff.
Ability to safely operate a 4-15 passenger cart
Ability to handle and be in close proximity to live animals of various taxa
Flexible availability including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and overnights.
Ability to travel locally, regionally, and internationally
This position requires successful completion of the following:
