Ensure smooth running of the program and hear staff concerns. Will consider best practices in education and bring suggestions for change. Liaise with Associate Chair and General Chemistry instructors as needed. Provide pedagogical and technical support to instructors, teaching assistants and students
Evaluate course effectiveness (particularly regarding in-sequence courses), and work with faculty/instructors to identify strategies for improvement
Institute new technologies/policies to ease administrative burdens for lecture/lab (using online/centralized form submission)*
Designate lecture component tasks to teaching assistants (TAs) and student assistants (grading/photocopying/etc). Provide supervision to teaching assistants and other part-time staff. Ensure that accurate grading of assignments is completed by teaching assistants
Initiate re-evaluation of textbooks and learning platforms as needed
Attend Texas Tech University-based educational workshops, work with the Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development Center, read current literature regarding teaching practices, and attend conferences
Maintain/update Chemistry Placement Exam
Maintain/update content on department’s webpage regarding general chemistry content
Liaise with Supplementary Instruction (SI) program
Aid in the design, adaptation, and modification of laboratory experiments
Oversee the organization and coordination of teaching laboratories
Evaluate success of Laboratory in imparting important skills and ensuring alignment with lecture course content*
Maintain library of experiments, and plan rotation of experiments on a regular basis (to minimize cheating from year to year)*
Step in for technical lab coordinator (along with teaching assistants) when needed
Track student excused absences across sections
Coordinate with Student Disability Services (SDS) to accommodate all enrolled students
For on-sequence courses:
Organize and contribute to exam writing
Respond to elevated emails (from a centralized email address)
Assign tutorials to teaching assistants and arrange teaching assistant office hours. Organize and distribute tutorial packets to teaching assistants, including problem solutions.
Administer single on-sequence blackboard section that contains all students and upload of grades (midterm, special requests and finals)
Handles all mid-term and final exam excusals (with possible administration of alternative exam)
Accommodate students for testing center as needed
Ensure even enforcement of course/department policies
Design student resource banks (video tutorials/lecture supplements)
Maintain test and practice exam banks/course note banks, keep track of question usage and statistics
Provide consistency in courses from year-to-year

Job assignment can be full-time or part-time depending on the needs of the department.
