WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION?
This position will join an experienced team of Program underwriters responsible for handling a designated program/industry and focused on new business development, plus renewals >$100K in premium. The Programs market is a growth engine for commercial lines carriers, and our Specialty Programs team is operating with a focused strategy for growth across its portfolio. Working on a designated program team, this position will identify key Hartford agents/brokers and program opportunities within their assigned territory, implement sales and marketing activities, maintain a strong customer focus and demonstrate an understanding of Specialty Program’s appetite and strategy.
Key Accountabilities will include:
Underwrite new and renewal book of business, totaling approximately $6-8M in total written premium; evaluate specialized program risks
Develop and maintain industry expertise within highly specialized coverage areas; capable of underwriting complex business, requiring limited support and infrequent referral activity to complete quotes
Accountable for pricing and program development to reflect identified exposures, financial condition, insured’s safety program and claim legal environment
Consistently applies all applicable line of business underwriting guidelines when making decisions
Quote new business opportunities and renewals, with underwriting authority approval through analyzing applications and re-rating accounts
Independently build territory sales plan to achieve financial operating plan of the assigned program
Creates, drives and executes on strategies for new and/or renewal accounts in partnership with individual agencies and with Specialty Programs leadership (prospective book management, executes on the mix strategy, territorial and agency sales plans, etc.)
Consults and provides solutions
Trusted advisor to agency – viewed as a specialized solution provider due to technical knowledge, underwriting acumen, and service
Responsible for and influences retention. Responsible for communicating individual account strategy to agency, educates others on strategy, and involves manager as appropriate.
Manages the sales process including planning, operating routines, and monitoring
Establishes and maintains pipeline; manages cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across team; generates cross-sell opportunities
Is well versed about every aspect of The Hartford's value proposition to best position us for success. Is professionally demanding and holds internal and external customers accountable.
Provide exceptional customer service and focus, including expedient responses to inquiries and submissions
Consults with agents/brokers to answer questions regarding coverage, process and appropriate resources within The Hartford based on their unique needs
Effectively manages and develops relationships, internally and externally
Knowledgeable about risk engineering and claim service available to insureds
Maintains thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance
Other responsibilities as warranted
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Minimum experience, education and skills required:
5-7+ years professional work experience; prior experience and proficiency in commercial underwriting
4 year undergraduate degree and/or insurance designations preferred
Previous experience working with agencies/brokers in sales/marketing or service capacity is preferred
Strong technical knowledge, decision making and analytical skills
Strong marketing and relationship management capabilities
Ability to function successfully in a fast-paced, team environment requiring a high level of customer service and responsiveness
