NEA is seeking individuals interested in participating in the NEA Summer 2019 internship session, which will begin on June 11, 2019 and will end on or before August 15, 2019. Interns who receive a stipend may intern up to a maximum of twenty (20) hours a week.

The NEA Internship Program provides interns with training, learning opportunities, and educational experiences through a variety of rich and substantive programmatic experiences that support quality public education. These experiences may include conducting research; data analysis; writing, editing, using Internet applications and social media; participating in and assisting with meetings and policy forums; visits to Capitol Hill; and other appropriate program-related activities. The internships range from six weeks to a full semester.

Position Summary

The NEA partners with institutions of higher education and other organizations to identify interns - generally juniors, seniors, recent college graduates (up to 18 months) or graduate students - who are interested in public education policy and education issues. Students pursuing degrees in Education, Political Science, Journalism, Communications, Mass Media, Graphic Design, Digital Communications and other disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Position Emphasis: This position supports NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by participating in internship opportunities in departments within the Center for Communications.

INTEGRATED INTERN

Description of Proposed Intern Assignment(s): Assist with strategic planning, developing and evaluating paid media campaigns, drafting brochures, developing talking points, working on developing complex research distilled into actionable language for various audiences, and working collaboratively to have content designed and produced for distribution either in print or online.

Writing Skills, Media Planning, Campaign Evaluation and Analysis, Opinion Research Methods & Applications, Message Discipline, Presentation Skills, Copywriting, Copyediting, and Strategic Planning for Communications.

MEDIA INTERN

Description of Proposed Intern Assignment(s): Draft media materials, pitch reporters, staff media interviews, and conduct open source research on media channels. Maintain reporter database, monitor social media channels for NEA’s media team, draft and distribute tweets for @NEAMedia, cut and edit broadcast media clips, prepare PowerPoint decks for various trainings, and other duties as assigned.

Expected skills and opportunities for development that the intern may obtain from this educational experience. Organization skills and the ability to work under deadline pressure. Keyboarding skills, some writing skills and the ability to learn several key media databases.

EDITORIAL INTERN

Description of Proposed Intern Assignment(s): Researching and writing articles for NEA Today, NEA Retired, Future Educators and neatoday.org. Creating multimedia pieces. Assisting staff writers with research and reporting.

DIGITAL INTERN

Description of Proposed Intern Assignment(s): Development of NEA Pinterest strategy, including audience identification, content creation, establishing posting cadence, identification and reporting back of KPIs, etc., for both NEAToday and EdVotes social properties. Support of NEA social strategy, including audience identification, community management, content creation (social share graphics), Monitoring and replying to Tweets from candidates and clients.

Expected skills and opportunities for development that the intern may obtain from this educational experience. Strong Photoshop; InDesign or Illustrator experience with a passion for social media. Must provide 2-3 samples of blog posts or other writing material and links to social media pages. This role offers the intern a total immersion into NEA’s digital and social strategy. The selected candidate will work closely with key members of the digital team, and partners across the building to learn about social media, digital communications and marketing in a business environment. This role will be instrumental in increasing our social media presence and gaining visibility for our Association among current and prospective members.

ORGANIZING COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

Description of Proposed Intern Assignment(s): Support of Organizing Communications work – specifically the New Educator Campaign and Inoculation Efforts on Drop Campaigns.

Expected skills and opportunities for development that the intern may obtain from this educational experience. How to build relationships with members and potential members with the Association via digital and print media; Use of data and data management to enhance efforts. Preferred skills: Spreadsheets, Writing for online platforms (email/social/websites); familiarity with design aesthetics for print; and social media proficiency.
