The Data Center Operations Lead coordinates activities of all data center operators, acts as a subject matter expert (SME) for the physical infrastructure technologies, and actively coordinates many aspects for the multiple internal data center support resources across all sites. This position coordinates support of systems, networks, SANs, and other points of connectivity, and the physical infrastructure environments including power, cooling, and physical security, that are essential for smooth operation of enterprise level systems. This position is repsonsible for vendor and procurement management, and the coordination of ordering, shipping and receiving at each site.

The physical infrastructure environment is the fundamental level that supports all enterprise operational systems that UW Medicine depends upon. An understanding of the physical, network connectivity and subsequent operational requirements is critical to the success of various systems.

This position exercises discretion, in of identifying tools, technologies, and methods of implementing solutions architectures, effectively coordinating day to day work assignments of team members and identifying technological gaps or opportunities for improvement in infrastructure or processes. It carries out responsibilities requiring a high level of technical expertise and provides insight and counsel to IT and operational management.

UW Medicine relies on enterprise wide technological solutions and electronic information to enable the quickest and most reliable health care for its customers. These systems must be available on a 24x7 basis in order to allow Physicians and Nursing staff access to vital patient information. If the systems are not available the potential for lost revenue and patient life is very real. Not only is the availability of the information but also the security of the information of the highest priority.

UW Medicine data centers currently include seven sites, with multiple points of integration as well as multiple potential points of failure. The physical infrastructure is the foundational level that supports all enterprise systems that UW Medicine depends upon. If the basic infrastructure isn't carefully managed, (the primary responsibility of this position), a change or problem in one part of the infrastructure can impact many systems, which may result in multiple system malfunctions, hardware failures, downtime, or delays across the UW Medicine enterprise.

Responsibilities include:
Lead Responsibilities (40%)

Directs other team members in performing system, or infrastructure configuration changes necessary to develop and /or maintain operational support, across multiple sites.

Leads data center personnel to perform their tasks to ensure production system environments operate reliably and efficiently. Works closely with staff to analyze problems and implement solutions. Continually drives improvement in infrastructure and services.

Actively leads team to define thresholds, alerts & notifications as needed, monitor and react to alarms generated from the support data center physical infrastructure systems monitoring tools for Data Center. Provides timely support to System Administrators, Network Engineers, and other teams during data center events depending on the impact to one or both medical centers.

Ensures proper monitoring of environmental system availability & performance, forwards reports associated metrics to team management.

Monitors ticket queue and drives resolution of tickets. Coordinates and tracks change control items to ensure compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLA's).

Ensures semi-annual data center audits are completed for each site within appropriate timeframe. That the information contained in the DCIM/Asset Inventory system is accurate.

Assists in managing and scheduling the on-call schedule in support of a 24/7 production environment.

Plans, develops, and implements standard datacenter support processes and policies. Defines and enforces technical and functional standards, and maintains quality control in the delivery of data center services.

Ensures proper oversight and follow-through on physical access security, and coordinates with various security organizations for multiple UW Medicine data center sites.

Coordinates training of junior and peer team members, and provides input on employee performance.

Vendor Management (20%)

Manages procurement for the team, acts as primary contact for vendors for quotes for equipment, supplies, maintenance, support and stability. Tracks orders, shipping/logistics, and assists with coordinating deployment.

Establishes priorities for deployment of equipment and systems.

Tracks open issues for resolution and routinely reports on status, reconciles Co-lo, vendor, product acquisition bills, and holds vendors accountable.

Provides oversight to vendor resources assigned to production work, including planned and unplanned outages, project work, and issue resolution.

Reports budgetary information as needed.

Data Center Projects (15%)

Leads other team members in performing system configuration changes necessary to develop and /or maintain operational support.

Acquires correct materials, and lead data center personnel in completing data center build-outs for infrastructure (i.e., fiber optic cabling) on time.

Assists Technical Project Manager (TPM) in identifying all tasks necessary to complete projects (both internal and external) on time.

Identifies roadblocks or obstacles and possible resolutions to ensure successful completion of project tasks (as soon as possible).

Customer Relationships (15%)

Maintains a positive service-oriented relationship with customers.

Sets expectations for scope, schedule and effort for requests.

Verifies that appropriate priorities for service requests are set.

Ensures issues and potential solutions are identified, and resolved promptly.

Verifies system requirements.

Ensures requests are completed in a timely manner. This responsibility requires coordination with all resources needed to accomplish the request either directly or through delegation.

Participates in and conducts regular coordination meetings as needed with various teams including Networks, Storage, System Administration, etc.

Planning (10%)

Leads planning capacity of multiple data centers with data center analysts and operators by gathering requirements from customers, planning deployment, and defining test plans as needed.

Designs and architects details of infrastructure; evaluates and recommends solutions.

Determines, plans, and executes systems and infrastructure deployment reliably and consistently.

What you’ll bring to the table: (minimum requirements)

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or other related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.

4+ years’ experience as a data center lead or supervisor which must also include:

Experience working collaboratively with teams to accomplish various data center projects, specifically with network connections, cooling, and electrical systems.

Experience leading BC/DR planning efforts with a focus on data centers.

Experience with customer service relations and vendor management, including acquisitions and logistics of equipment and services.

Experience defining and implementing service metrics definitions and reporting using a DCIM or other applicable solution.

Utilize standard ITS and/or DCOM change management procedures to document and manage work within each data center.

Successful candidates will also possess:
Excellent written and oral communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively with technical and business teams, as well as with non-technical staff or customers.

Ideally, you’ll also have: (desired skills and experience)

6+ years’ varied infrastructure support experience.

Project management experience related to data centers.

Designing and implementing service metrics definitions.

Process improvement, including documentation, workflows, etc.

Demonstrated progressive experience in design, implementation and integrating both mainstream infrastructure monitoring applications such as DCIM solutions.

Demonstrated experience in SharePoint site content management.

Demonstrated experience supporting healthcare mission critical applications.

Familiar with HIPAA, change control and industry standard best practices.

Capable of balancing workload and upward communication.

Ability to effectively document processes, status, configurations, etc. in web-based solutions such as SharePoint.

UW Medicine IT Services responds on a 24 x 7 basis, to maintain operational performance.

Requires carrying a pager or other means notification and participation in on-call rotation.

Requires the ability to frequently and efficiently travel to off-site locations to meet time-sensitive customer needs. (Valid Washington State driver’s license.)

Rare risk of electrical shock, rare risk of working in vibration, and often works in an envrionment with moderate noise.

Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
