Shrub Oak International School is a world-class, private, special education boarding and day school preparing students for independent adult life and employment. We serve the sophisticated needs of an international co-ed population of young adults on the Autism Spectrum. Each student’s team of clinicians, teachers, and student- life staff collaborate closely to address the student’s issues quickly and reinforce therapies and learning paths, so that the student progresses more rapidly. Our modern, technology-infused facility is set on 127 acres of agriculture and farmland where students learn in a natural environment full of sensory experiences. The technology-infused building boasts a modern gym, dining facility, common rooms for socializing, high-tech state-of-the art classrooms, and dormitories. Our Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a year round position, serving as an integral part of Shrub Oak’s comprehensive health and wellness program. He/she employs a student-centric approach to provide front line support to perform basic non-invasive procedures as needed for our students and escalating any issues to the Director of Health and Wellness as needed and required. He/she will collaborate with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. The EMT builds trusting relationships with students, families, and the community, while representing Shrub Oak International School in a respectful, competent manner.
Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position
Works with the Director of Health and Wellness to support sick or injured students within his/her certification, and escalating all matters to the Director of Health and Wellness as needed and required; and in accordance with Shrub Oak protocols and standard certification procedures
Employs a student-centric approach, ensuring that high quality, respectful care is consistently provided to all students.
Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality, whether communicating verbally, electronically, or in writing, and in accordance with legal requirements
Ensures, as an integral member of the health care team, that each student’s record is complete and up-to-date; timely and accurately completes all necessary medical documents and forms
Follows Shrub Oak policies and procedures, and proactively seeks clarification if they are unclear
Attends and participates in department/agency meetings, events and professional development opportunities on a routine basis
Abiilty to handle challenging behaviors and/or student crisis situations should they occur.
Supports students on various life skills matters as needed collaborating with faculty, clinicians and campus life staff as necessary with regular follow-up as needed
Attends all staff meetings and seminars as scheduled, including all staff orientation/training
Remains abreast of updates and advances in nursing, health and wellness generally and with respect to our students through professional development activities, internally and externally
Performs other department responsibilities as needed.
Required Skills – Competencies – Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Licensed NY Emergency Medical Technician with a minimum of two (2) years EMT experience, preferred
Security guard experience and license is a plus
Valid NYS Driver’s License
Passionate about working with and mentoring students (adolescents and young adults) within area of responsibilities, all to empower his/her self-determination, self-advocacy and development
Ability to de-escalate challenging behaviors if needed
Ability to proficiently document care given, keep timely documentation of written and verbal reports. Provide necessary follow-up. Ability to effectively give and receive shift reports.
Ability to understand and follow instructions in English; write routine reports and correspondence; read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals; and perform simply arithmetic
Excellent communication skills to all levels of individuals, including individuals on the autism spectrum; ability to present information and respond to questions from all levels of staff, students, school staff and the public as needed.
Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and prioritize; excellent time management skills. Able to handle constant interruptions of tasks
Ability for flexible schedule and work overtime as needed to perform job functions
Ability to effectively and proactively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that values diversity, and positively portrays Shrub Oak, its programs, personnel, and philosophies
Demonstrated ability to remain sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of the students, families, faculty, and staff, with a high degree of cultural competency and collegiality
Ability to adapt, remain flexible and have the ability to make sound and appropriate decisions within scope of certification under pressure where situations/circumstances are continually evolving
Ability handle multiple situations with discretion, sensitivity to a variety of factors, and utilizing sound judgment
Proficiency in computer skills including the Microsoft Office Suite, databases, electronic communication, and web based applications
Ability to work flexible hours is helpful

What are the nature and scope of independent decisions made in this position?
Must be able to think analytically, critically, assessing a variety of information to make judgments on student situations, outcomes, in accordance with Shrub Oak policies, protocol and EMT certification
Work Environment: This job operates on a school campus
Physical demands are in excess of sitting, and require walking or standing to a significant degree. Work might regularly include multiple or conflicting demands, and pressures; sustained concentration, considerable physical effort or manual dexterity.
Sufficient vision (with correction) to read and to observe more distant objects. Ability to do considerable walking in order to make campus rounds and inspections. Sufficient stamina to work outside in bad weather conditions when required. Ability to move or run quickly as needed to identify and respond to emergencies.
Ability to navigate stairs, mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement, bending and squatting, lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds, and the ability to rearrange furniture for events is occasionally required
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a part time overnight position.
