The Product Development Scientist will be responsible for the development of new products and processes, and the reformulation of products to improve quality, processing efficiency, and ingredient cost. The position must handle multiple projects, adhere to project timelines, and organize workloads while maintaining accurate, detailed documentation of tasks and results. The position interacts with all levels of the organization and routinely works with industry professionals, vendors, competitors, auditors, and other third parties. This position reports to the Chief Science Officer.

Be a key contributor to the Product Development team by supporting development and commercialization of new product introductions and improving productivity and quality of existing products
Participate in design of new products, including interpreting customer needs and assembling input from cross-functional teams
Coordinate cross-functional efforts, organize meetings and facilitate knowledge transfer and decision making
Design, plan and execute experiments for bench top, pilot plant and plant trials, gather and analyze data, document and report results, and make recommendations
Conduct a wide range of analytical tests, sensory and consumer testing, shelf life and product stability studies, and recommend storage and handling requirements
Write detailed ingredient, product, and process specifications
Equip sales teams with essential product knowledge by conducting technical training sessions.
Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to develop product concepts and formulate prototypes for proof of concept
Effectively communicate product ideas and technical test results with project teams and leadership during internal project meetings and with the customers
Write and document equipment and product development SOPs and follow food GMP practice
Lead development of packaging copy to be compliant with all regulations
Assist with development of gold standard product specifications for assigned products
Support Product Excellence programs and training rollouts as well as maintenance
Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemical Engineering or similar education
Minimum 3-5-year hands-on product development experience with food CPG companies
Experience working in and, preferably, managing food lab operations
Experience working in a highly collaborative team orientated environment
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent analytical, organizational and multi-tasking skills, as well as the ability to interact and collaborate successfully with all levels and functional areas
Preferred product experience: Soups, bases, broths, concentrates, RTE foods, frozen foods, sauces and dressings
Understanding of current “better-for-you” food trends, including clean label, natural, gluten free, paleo, keto
Travel as necessary (up to 25%)
Bachelor’s degree in a Food Science
Experience in soups, bases, concentrates
Genesis nutrition software expertise

Aseptic and retorted product experience
