Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Criminal Justice, Science, or in a field related to the job, plus one (1) year experience in crime scene investigation, in a crime laboratory, or in law enforcement.
Experience or education may be substituted up to four (4) years.

Must posses the following skills or certifications:
Must obtain IAI Level I – Crime Scene Technician Certification, within 12 months of being eligible for testing.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
Valid Drivers License

Candidates will be tested for the Nelson-Denny which includes vocabulary and reading comprehension. A passing score will advance the applicant to a panel interview in person or by phone.

A valid Texas driver license and current driving record that meets the requirements of the City of Austin Driver Safety Program are required for this position. Information regarding the City’s Driver Safety Program standards can be found here:

Pay Range
$20.47 – $26.04 Hourly Rate

Shift work (6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., or 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. with schedules based on seniority). Rotating days off including holidays and weekends, and rotating “on call” weeks required throughout the year.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive crime scene processing experience in the field, under an accredited crime laboratory.
  • Extensive experience with 24/7 work hours, rotating shifts, and on-call availability.
  • Two (2) years of successful proficiency testing under an accredited crime laboratory.
  • Any level of I.A.I. Crime Scene certification.
