Are you looking to make a difference in your career? We’re working on smarter grids, cleaner energy and tools to help people manage energy more efficiently.

About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 15 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position overview
The Power Systems Engineer position is a component of the Integrated Innovation and Modernization (IMM) organization. The overall objectives of the organization are to meet the State’s greenhouse gas emission targets, strengthen and modernize the electric grid, and enhance cross-organization effectiveness. Key components of the IMM include: 1) identifying and evaluating potential disruptive technologies that could impact SCE’s Corporate Strategy and Grid Modernization; 2) evaluating emerging technologies to determine if they should be proposed as an SCE demonstration project; and 3) monitoring and seeking partnering opportunities with research entities in evaluating emerging technologies.

The engineer in this group will be responsible for broad technology awareness and capabilities in renewable energy, electric transportation, grid modernization, substation and distribution automation, storage technologies, telecommunications, and cybersecurity. The engineer will leverage the Strategy, Integrated Planning, and Performance (SIPP) organization to align technology research and demonstration with the Corporate Strategy and the Technology Roadmap. More specifically, the engineer will apply real-time simulation technologies in power and energy systems (design and implementation of power hardware-in-the-loop system architecture, testing, and strategies for controllers, protective relays, phasor applications, DER integration {storage, EV, smart inverters}, etcetera)

Typical Responsibilities:
Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies that are possibly impactful to SCE’s business
Conduct specific technology evaluation in a lab setting to determine if technology would be a potential technology to demonstrate as useful to the overall Grid Modernization Plan
Leverage existing evaluations of emerging technologies by National Labs, Research Universities, and Research institutions and develop ongoing relationships with these organizations to participate in joint evaluations and influence industry direction.
Understand Corporate Strategy and Technology Roadmap; provide feedback on technology issues that would impact the Strategy and Roadmap; and align Research Strategy, Demonstrations, and Partnerships to forward the strategy and roadmap
Articulate overall Research Strategy to broad group of stakeholders and solicit input and feedback
Qualifications
