SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT
Under the general direction of the Education Specialist, with lead direction from the Director of Special Education, provides behavioral consultation to teachers and interventions for students. The position provides direct care for students with behavioral difficulties by providing instruction as assigned, behavior management and preparation of classroom materials to students, and consultation to teachers as directed by the Education Specialist. Responsible for maintaining records and data to support Individual Education Plans (IEP) for assigned special education students. Development and revision of functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans and coordination with other IEP team members is essential. Assignment may be at the elementary or secondary level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides behavior support and training to teachers, children, and staff in coordination with IEP teams.
- Responsible for the delivery of an ABA-informed functional behavior assessment and behavior intervention
- plan as outlined by the Education Specialist and for the training of classroom staff to generalize and
- sustain the plan.
- Assists the Education Specialist in the development of an individualized student and family centered
- education plan. Uses visual supports to make the sequence of daily activities predictable and understandable.
- Uses visual supports to make individual tasks understandable.
- Assists with preparation for and implementation of behavior management techniques, educational and
- vocational instruction and vocational placement programs.
- Instructs students in large or small groups or one-to-one as assigned by and under the direction of the education specialist.
- Administers or assists the education specialist with administration of assessment instruments.
- Prepares materials for use by student, teacher and parents.
- Uses computer for data entry and to produce correspondence and reports; operates copier, fax and other office machines.
- Gathers, summarizes and reports student data to inform response to intervention protocols and behavior intervention planning.
- May accompany students in any educational settings for observation and intervention.
- May assist with profile development for education and vocation planning.
- May work with high-risk students that are severely emotionally disturbed and/or dangerous.
- Provides training staff in de-escalation and behavior intervention.
- Performs other essential functions as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in the field of human development, human services, public health, health education, nursing, social work, early childhood education, child development, psychology, or a related field from an accredited public or private institution of higher education.
Training in autism strategies including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and/or TEACCH and a minimum of six months of successful, relevant, documented work experience with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) terminology.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of Treatment and Education of Autistic and related
- Communication-handicapped Children (TEACCH).
- Knowledge of classroom management for children with ASD.
- Knowledge of de-escalation and intervention strategies for students with behavioral disturbance.
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
- Ability to communicate in person, writing or on the phone, with students, staff, parents, and volunteers, in a diverse environment.
- Ability to work under pressure, adjust to varied situations, demands, and new behavior issues.
- Ability to learn and integrate policies and procedures adopted by the school building
- Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
- Ability to use arms, hand and fingers; lift 20 pounds and push/pull 40 pounds; to sit for prolonged periods of time
Certification and Licenses
- Training certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and/or Treatment and Education for Autistic and Related Communication-handicapped Children
- (TEACCH), or four years’ experience working with autistic children and the ability to obtain ABA and/or TEACCH within 2 years.
- Washington State ESA Certification
Desirable Qualifications
- Certification as a BCaBA therapist or higher
- TEACCH Practitioner level certification
- Right Response certification
- Willingness to complete Right Response Trainer certification
Schedule:
- Approximately 37.5 hours/week
- Estimated 183 days/year
