Synopsis:
A Facade Specialist is an office-wide leader responsible for developing and detailing complex building enclosure systems with limited oversight by an assigned supervisor. He/she is seen as subject matter resource within the firm and is focused on the development of staff through project team engagement, staff supervision and mentorship. A Facade Specialist is expected to contribute to larger project strategies, resourcing and project performance goals through the lens of building enclosure systems.

Qualifications:
Completion of five or six-year architectural degree program, and/or completion of an equivalent engineering degree program;
Minimum of 8 years total relevant professional experience; experience required in all phases of project work including preparation of conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction documents and supporting materials;
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of architectural practice with a particular focus on the design, documentation and execution of building enclosure systems;
Demonstrated experience in leading of teams in the completion of architectural projects;
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of building materials, detailing, construction techniques, building systems selection, related engineering principles, sustainability strategies and building codes;
Demonstrated awareness of latest industry wide initiatives, technologies and processes in the A/E/C community;
Demonstrated practical understanding of the application of digital tools for analysis, modeling and documentation;
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing;
Sets an example for team effort through the spirit of cooperation;
Seeks creative and innovative solutions;
Professional licensure preferred;

Responsibilities:
Develops thorough understanding of design philosophy of projects and provides major input in developing a design and building performance strategy relative to building enclosure systems and can effectively convey this to the project team;
Provides technical design input and support for the development of the enclosure concept during early design phases;
Plans, schedules, organizes, and executes the enclosure development, documentation and execution for projects in compliance with contract deliverables;
Proactively checks and coordinates project documents (including but not limited to drawing set organization, details, dimensions, interdisciplinary coordination items, specifications coordination, etc.) and is responsible for quality control of such tasks in accordance with SOM’s quality control program;
Takes on a leadership role in enclosure specific tasks such as material selection and vetting, cladding pressure analysis, visual and performance mock-ups etc. in direct collaboration with project team leaders;
Performs and/or directs material and building systems research and participates in the coordination and preparation of project specifications;
Participates in construction phase (construction administration) services specific to building enclosure systems including: review of shop drawings and submittals, coordination and development of responses to inquiries and RFIs, preparation of punch-lists and field observation reports, and makes appropriate value judgments with respect to field corrective work in support of the design concepts and performance goals of the project.
Develops leadership presence office wide as a resource for technical design and, particularly, enclosure related efforts;
Drives collaborative relationship with consultants and knowledge resources to ensure that deliverables are coordinated, integrated and support the performance goals of the project;
Directly assists and mentors assigned team members and, more broadly, architectural levels A, B, C, D and E in the office at large as appropriate;
Seeks to build an external presence at industry events, conferences, organizations and beyond;
