Mobile UI/UX Designer, Smart Home App
Location: San Jose, CA Reporting to: Sr Software Manager
The Kasa Design Team wants designers with breadth. Our team isn't content to focus on just one area; we work with teams across the entire company to ensure that design is a fundamental component of our projects. As such, we need designers who can do more than just layout IA diagrams or polish pixels. We want designers who can do it all - app UX and UI, product ID, AE animation and some 3D modeling for good measure. It might sound like too much, but we believe in hiring designers who can excel at all aspects of a product's design lifecycle and that means a broad, multi-disclpinary skill set.
The Kasa app is the team's main responsibility and takes up the majority of our time. You'll need to be able to create dead-simple and straightforward UX flows that account for all of the things that can go wrong when you mix apps and hardware together. And you'll need to be able to bring your UX to life with fully-formed visuals using Sketch, Invision and Principle. The more familiar you are with iOS and Android, the better. We work closely with the Dev teams to ensure our designs are both feasible and technically competent, so knowing your stuff will go a long way.
We're pushing ourselves to create a visual style that puts us head and shoulders above our smart home brethren and to do that, we're using Rhino 3D. You'll need to be able to model common household environments in Rhino including furnishings, pose products and create compelling visuals that help tell the story of our products throughout onBoarding and beyond. If you don't know Rhino, we'll get you up and running.
We believe in using animation to help convey complex ideas succinctly. You'll be using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects to bring our still artwork to life. Don't worry, we don't animate everything; only what is needed to enhance a user's understanding of a particular concept. If you don't know After Effects, we'll guide you through our unique workflow to get you started.
When designing smart home devices, you can't stop at just the App experience. Understanding how the physical devices work in a user's home is paramount to an end-to-end user experience. You'll work with product managers and an industrial design team to get it right; but we expect that you'll be considering the tangible product with every virtual feature you design. We do our best to 3D print as many toys as we can, too; they make good desk accessories.
Smart Home Passion
No matter how great a designer you may be, you need to be passionate about the IoT, smart home, home automation - whatever you want to call it. The only way to make truly standout products in this space is to live and breath it. You should know about our biggest competitors - the experiences that work well and those that fail miserably - how easy (or difficult) it is to setup an Alexa skill - and you should have at least considered replacing a light switch (because you'll be thinking deeply about those mundane, everyday items - everyday).
Everything that can be done natively in iOS or Android, we do. But occasionally, there are areas of the app that need to exist as web content. For this, you should have some familiarity with web design, especially mobile-friendly web design.
How can we design products without considering their final point of sale presentation? While marketing handles the majority of these tasks, the Design Team often works with the Product Management team and Marketing to ensure consistent messaging, artwork and overall presentation between the App and these more tangible design assets. If you've never worked with die lines or printing presses, don't worry; the team focuses on the presentation and content.
As for our team? We're a small team with lots of responsibility across a surprisingly large array of projects. We've worked hard to establish our credibility in design thinking and we support each other in design criticism, learning new tools and improving our processes. We do our best to adhere to a 2-week agile sprint, balancing business needs for new products with designers' needs to experiment in an amorphous timeline. We take a story from concept to completion, from IA to UI. We have lunch together. We play pingpong on occasion. We're all genuinely passionate about design.
Our background is varied and we value that when considering new additions. Collectively, the team has experience in everything from architecture to business economics, marketing and branding, film and even industrial product design. We like our design diversity and we value the differing perspectives it gives us when solving problems. We expect nothing less from potential candidates.
A portfolio that shows your design style, developed products and overall attention to detail. Submissions without portfolios will not be considered.
