Tate & Lyle is looking for a Analytical Scientist who will serve as a Principal Scientist and key area leader in the Analytical group, Global R&D. Global R&D is located at the Tate & Lyle facility in Hoffman Estates, IL (near Chicago).The team is currently composed of a diverse group of experienced scientists with skills in chromatography, spectroscopy, materials science, microbiology, and chemical analysis.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
This Principal Scientist will be engaged in planning and executing laboratory work to characterize ingredients, supervision of technicians, and planning project resources. The Principal Scientist will also be expected to engage with internal and external resources to advance technical product development and to provide technical expertise to support existing business in relevant areas.
A broad background in measurement science applied to food ingredients is desirable. Experience in carbohydrate chemistry and characterization is required. Experience in all of the areas of measurement science from the following list is also desirable:
Hands-on expertise in rheology, mechanical properties testing, thermal analysis, microscopy and surface science applied to carbohydrate polymers applied to the specialty food ingredient space with an emphasis on structure-property relationships for food ingredients and their matrices. Most desirably, this experience will include demonstrated skills in quantitative and qualitative analyses of carbohydrates and other natural products.
The Principal Scientist will have two primary areas of responsibility:
1.Measurement Area Leadership:
The Principal Scientist will lead capability build and execution in a specific measurement area, driving successful use of measurement tools to advance new product development. The Principal Scientist will also engage with regulatory, legal, commercial and other non-technical personnel to ensure measurement work is in accordance with internal processes & metrics, and will be responsible for delivery of the measurement work packages against project timelines. The Principal Scientist will have a demonstrated knowledge of time and resource management techniques, tools & processes necessary to accomplish these tasks.
2.Execution of Technical Project Objectives:
The Principal Scientist will be engaged in planning and executing laboratory work to characterize ingredients, supervision & mentoring of junior scientists & technicians, and planning project resources. The Principal Scientist will also be expected to engage with internal and external resources to advance technical product development and to provide technical expertise to support existing business in relevant areas.

Other key relationships: Production, commercial, quality, regulatory, legal, engineering, etc.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biochmistry, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines and 6-10 years of industrial experience, or an MS degree with 9-13 years of industrial experience.
Fluency in English is a requirement. Proficiency in one of the following languages is desirable: Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, French, German, Korean, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, or Arabic.
