Position Summary
The School of Natural Resources and the Environment is hiring a temporary Research/Laboratory Assistant. This job primarily involves lab work to analyze water samples for microplastic contamination in the Santa Cruz River. Over 90% of the time will be spent in the lab, but occasional trips to field sites may be required.

Duties & Responsibilities
—processing of stream water samples (e.g. bulk water grabs, drift net, sediment cores) to determine concentrations of microplastics suspended in the water column and deposited in the benthic zone of the stream

—density separation and organic material digestion to isolate microplastics, which are subsequently filtered and examined under a microscope for identification and enumeration

—datasheet management, data entry, preliminary data analyses

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
—knowledge of stream ecology and water quality topics
—laboratory skills for processing bulk water grab, drift net, and sediment core samples
—ability to work independently and rigorously collect fine-scale data under controlled lab conditions
—ability to keep track of data, QC data sheets, and problem-solve issues with data
—ability to develop and maintain databases

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications
Three years of related laboratory or field research experience; OR,any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
—Two years of stream ecology experience
—Two years of water quality analysis experience
—B.S. in Natural Resources or related fields
—Lab experience in analyses of microplastics

Full Time/Part Time To be determined. Number of Hours Worked per Week 20-30 Job Category Research Benefits Eligible Yes - Limited Benefits FLSA Non-Exempt Posted Rate of Pay $13 to $14 Per Hour
