ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: The Veterinary Technician works hand-in-hand with veterinarians to ensure quality patient care, and to aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work. The Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
- Obtain and record patient histories.

Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.

Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian.

Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian.

Able to induce, intubate and maintain anesthesia (non-rebreather and rebreathing systems)

Use of a ventilator and cautery

Calculate drug dosages and log-controlled drugs
-
Place IV catheters
-
Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals.

Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery.

Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.

Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of high-tech diagnostic equipment including electrocardiographic, radiographic and ultrasonographic equipment.

Take and process radiographs including dental radiographs

Dental charting and extractions

Communicate with and educate pet owners.

Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies.

Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.

Ability to adhere to a regular work schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Completed veterinary courses through an accredited program (AVMA or CVTEA)

Must have a valid Veterinary Technician License from the State of California.

Collaboration and teamwork skills

Experience with medical software and veterinary safety procedures

Knowledge of basic veterinary medical terminology

Patience and calming abilities when handling unstable or nervous pets

Ability to remain calm during high-stress or emergency situations

Strong time management, multitasking and organizational skills.
