Primary Function:
The HSNY Director of External Affairs will lead strategic initiatives to enhance community engagement and strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders across NYS including community board managers, NY government agencies, non-profit partners, and elected officials. This role will help drive HSNY’s visibility and align organizational objectives with community involvement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Establish and Execute Community Engagement Plan: Develop and execute a comprehensive community engagement strategy in collaboration with the executive team that focuses on the growth of the agency.
2. Community Outreach: Act as the point of contact for community board managers. Maintain relationships with NYC government agencies, elected officials, and non-profit partners through community engagement events and digital touchpoints such as, newsletters, e-emails, etc.
3. Event Coordination and Management: Coordinate staff participation in community events, meetings, and public forums to ensure HSNY is represented actively and effectively in areas that will provide the agency the highest impact for participation.
4. Agency Collaboration: Collaborate with internal teams to align community engagement efforts with organizational goals and programs. Ensure that all programmatic teams follow general guidelines for community engagement.
5. Effective Communication: Effectively communicate the organization's mission, programs, and impact via public platforms to community stakeholders and elected officials. Efficiently funnel external requests and feedback to the appropriate partners within the agency.
6. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all community engagement activities, touchpoints, and outcomes. Ensure timely and complete submission of all required documents and reports.
7. Establish and Increase Agency Network: Attend community meetings, conferences, and events to expand the agency’s network and identify potential partners and funding opportunities.
Position Scope:
The Director of External will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to engage the community, coordinate staff involvement in events, and foster relationships with NYC government agencies, elected officials, and community board managers.
Position Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in a political science or social service related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
Experience:
1. 5-8 years of experience in community engagement, relationship building, and/or NY public policy.
2. Familiarity with NY government and elected officials.
3. Experience in coordinating and managing staff participation in community events and initiatives.
4. Proven track record in effective written and verbal communication that translates an organization’s mission.
Skills and Knowledge:
1. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
2. Knowledge of NYS and NYC lobby regulations, a plus.
3. Excellent research and analytical skills.
4. Ability to develop and execute community engagement strategies.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Google Workspace.
6. Highly organized with strong project management skills.
7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
8. Understanding of nonprofit operations and objectives.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
