The Associate Coordinator of the BYU Writing Center (WC) draws on expertise in the field of writing center studies to oversee day-to-day operations of the Research and Writing Center (RWC); provides ongoing education and mentoring for undergraduate writing consultants in face-to-face and online environments; collaborates with the WC Coordinator, WC Administrative Assistant, and library RWC administrators to manage and assess program services, resources, and staff; and supervises and collaborates with the WC Administrative Assistant.

Essential Functions:
Educate, Mentor, and Assess Writing Consultants

Develop, coordinate, and implement ongoing education (training) for new and returning writing consultants in line with writing center scholarship and international tutor training program certification (ITTPC)
Develop and maintain curriculum for weekly training meetings
Maintain curriculum and provide supervision and evaluation for online writing consultant training
Provide formal mentoring for writing consultants through developing and managing project-based learning assignments
Provide ongoing mentoring and formal and informal assessment of writing consultants based on current writing center research and best practices in peer tutoring in writing

Manage and Supervise Research and Writing Center Services

Manage day-to-day operations in the RWC in collaboration with WC and RWC administrators
Coordinate supervision for 50+ writing consultants in collaboration with WC and RWC administrators
Supervise online writing consultation services
Supervise and collaborate with WC Administrative Assistant on office management (budget, scheduling, purchasing)
Collaborate with WC administrators, RWC administrators, and HBLL staff on data collection/analysis, reporting, assessment, and related program maintenance (scheduling, supervision, training, online presence, policies and procedures, etc.).

Develop and Maintain Writing Center Resources and Services

Develop and maintain current writing resources, in-house and online, in conjunction with project-based learning assignments


MA in rhetoric and composition or related field
At least 1 year of work experience in a writing tutoring or academic support program that includes student employee supervision, mentoring, training, tutoring, and/or management experience
Record of effective university or college-level teaching

Experience working with multilingual, graduate, basic composition, and online writers
Scholarship or professional activity in the writing center profession or in relevant areas
Writing center administration experience

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications (please indicate whether “required” or “preferred”):

Knowledge of and commitment to writing center theory and practice
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals and in groups
Strong interpersonal, communication (written and oral), and organizational skills
Strong project planning and management skills for projects of varying complexity
Ability to work under pressure, maintain focus, and meet deadlines within a busy environment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and website management

Writing center experience (tutoring and administrative) in multiple environments (face-to-face, online; synchronous and asynchronous)
Writing program administration experience (curriculum, assessment, planning, budgeting)
Additional education, training, and/or credentials in related fields (TESOL, professional writing, editing, tutoring, teaching)

Employee Class: 3/4 Time (28 hour)
Work Location: Provo Campus

Approximate Starting Salary: $25.89 - $33.63 depending on experience and qualifications
