Innovation Idea Intern – Atlanta, GA

The Opportunity:
The Digital Innovation Idea Intern is responsible for creating long-term competitive advantage and sustainable growth for WestRock through the identification and development of incremental and disruptive digital business and product opportunities.
This position includes the identification, selection and validation of new business and product concepts and encompasses the management of related business processes to achieve these results. This position will work within a multi-disciplinary team of marketing, industrial design, and technical specialists chartered with the goal of demonstrating industry innovation leadership. As such, the Innovation Idea Intern role will act as a visionary and evangelist, identifying and building confidence for new digital business and product concepts and the associated innovation methodologies.
This innovation role must balance “fuzzy front-end thinking” with “concrete doing skills” to drive project management and milestone execution through the innovation group. This is not a “think-tank/academic” style innovation role that never gets a product to shelf – this is a “practical application/real-world” player-coach role in a fast-paced, dynamic company.

How You Will Impact WestRock:
Manages and leads process from idea generation to prototyping to implementation

Manages a portfolio of projects ranging from current development to 5 years prior to product launch; transferring the production-ready technologies to product groups for introduction when ready to fully commercialize.
Bring to market concepts from sources across the organization and developed in collaboration with third parties.
Actively seeks out new, innovative ideas relevant to WestRock’s business through several channels (external sources, technology networks, internal hackathons or ideations, etc.)
Proactively engage internal and external stakeholders for cross-functional input and recognize internal dependencies and priorities in a dynamic environment;
Manage multiple initiatives and coordinate multiple stakeholders and timelines

Facilitate the adoption of innovative mindset across WestRock organization

Be a change agent in WestRock IT as we need a step change in how we approach our innovation efforts. He or she must fit well with our fast-paced culture and be a strong communicator who can enroll different functional groups, and potentially different operating company members, to support and execute our plans.
Build confidence for the new digital innovation program and process and champion innovation throughout the organization.
Work with internal and external innovation leaders, universities, trade associations to build and enhance the capabilities of the Innovation Center of Excellence.

Ecosystem partnerships

Identify potential emerging technology opportunities, in-licensing prospects, and partnerships, supporting one or more scientific areas of interest.
Proactively search for new partnership, acquisition, or vendor opportunities with external providers, and jointly with IT, managing those relationships on an ongoing basis
Understand the competitive landscape, market dynamics and trends, voice of the customer and solution gaps, as well as opportunities for the respective markets.

What You Need to Succeed:
Candidate must be open-minded, possess a broad perspective, and be able to visualize how ideas and insights might translate into reality. Individual must be self-motivated and self-directed and have demonstrated such skills in past work assignments as well as the ability to adapt quickly to priority / opportunity changes with ease.
Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint is necessary for successful execution of the position. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required along with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
Technology savvy and knowledge of external technology networks (start-ups, incubators, tech forums, etc.) are strongly desired.
