NURSE PRACTITIONER – [PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH]
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Mission: The mission of the Chicago Department of Public Health is to promote and improve health by engaging residents, communities, and partners in establishing and implementing policies and services that prioritize residents and communities
Performs psychiatric and physical assessments, including interviewing patients to obtain complete medical histories as well as ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests and refers patients to hospitals as their treatment or condition warrants
Diagnoses mental illness and interprets data to facilitate treatment plans
Prescribes medication for treatment of patient’s mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders
Provides psycho-pharmaceutical medicine management and counseling for patients in person and via telehealth platform
Provides continued medication, medication monitoring, patient education, and refers patients to hospitals as their treatment or condition warrants
Coordinates various phases of treatment with other health care providers and completes peer review audits
Evaluates the patient care amongst a multi-disciplinary team
Travels to public and nonprofit health centers to provide trauma-informed services
Documents and maintains patient mental health service plan, prognosis, contact, and progress in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system
Participates in programmatic design of integrated health systems and offers guidance in the integration of psychiatry
Keeps abreast of current developments in patient care management, health care legislation, and community resources. Participates in staff development programs for professional nursing staff

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing with certification as a Nurse Practitioner with a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing with 5 years of providing mental health care services to patients in a psychiatric setting
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
A valid State of Illinois Advanced Practice Nurse and Registered Nurse license at the time of employment
Applicants must possess a valid and current Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) at the time of employment
A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment and/or written exercise as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Previous experience conducting psychiatric evaluations for a seriously mentally ill population
Previous experience providing patient care using telehealth services
Previous experience working on a multidisciplinary team
Previous experience working in a public health environment
Previous experience administering injections of medications
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference for both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documents. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Office on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Evaluation: Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application. Applications must be submitted by the individual applicant. No second party applicants will be accepted.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
