HLW is looking for a Director of Sustainability & Wellness to join our global practice. This individual will be responsible for developing and guiding the sustainability and wellness vision for the firm. This position is an opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to help guide a global practice as we move into the next decade with confirmed commitments to addressing climate change, environmental impact, and human health and wellness. The work will include strategic planning, research, thought leadership, marketing, business development, certification services, and internal education. The Director of Sustainability and Wellness will work across offices globally and report directly to Senior Leadership.
Global sustainability lead for offices in Los Angeles, New Jersey, Connecticut, London, and Shanghai. Develop and guide future sustainability and wellness strategic efforts.
Lead HLW research, thought leadership, and marketing efforts through the development of tools, trend reports, white papers, case studies, blog posts or other related materials.
Develop and maintain business development relationships and participate in the proposal and pitch process.
Manage small team of direct reports and larger global sustainability network across offices.
Oversee development and management of sustainability and wellness project work and certifications.
Coordinate, lead, and advise large project teams of external consultants
Internal training, and awareness raising
Degree in architecture, interior design, environmental design or a related discipline.
10+ years of professional experience in sustainability design, construction, and consulting.
LEED AP with specialty (ID+C or BD+C) or another relevant accreditation required.
Experience in working with C-suite level and senior leadership to communicate complex content, develop consensus, and drive progress.
Experience in leading and mentoring a team of sustainability analysts and working across studios with large external project teams.
Experience in developing and managing project fees and work management plans.
Experience in leading the management and administration of certification systems, specifically LEED v3 and v4 in ID+C and BD+C. Experience with the WELL, Fitwel, Living Building Challenge, Passive House, Sites, or other third-party rating systems is a plus.
Knowledge of building codes and reference standards related to certification systems (i.e. ASHRAE, IES…)
Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices in sustainability and wellness design, construction, technologies, and consistent high performance.
Strong understanding of mechanical system design, construction documents, and ability to interpret design intent put forth in working drawings
Excellent communication, graphic and verbal presentation skills.
Versatility with computer graphics software including but not limited to AutoCAD / Revit, energy modeling software (i.e. Formit, Sefaira…), Adobe CS Programs, MS Office Suite, and material databases (i.e. UL Spot, Pharos…)
