Full Job Description
The Sr. Specifications Manager leads the Specification Management team responsible for generating and modifying finished product, manufacturing, and raw material specifications for all finished products distributed by Bob Evans Farms and Crystal Farms.
- Lead development of technical specifications for finished (food) products and/or materials (packaging, ingredients, and contact chemicals) within the Specification Management system.
- Work with R&D developers in generating draft and finished Specifications for new products.
- Work with R&D developers and process engineers in developing manufacturing specifications.
- Provide technical assistance to others within the Specification Management team.
- Complete timely modifications of finished product and material specifications while maintaining appropriate change records.
- Generate specification reports and route for approval within the Specification Management system.
- Lead work on Nutrition Facts panels for finished products.
- Interface with production and QA staff, project managers, product developers, and others on the project team to ensure information and documentation is accurately incorporated into the specification.
- Develop and maintain specification standards for all product and material types.
- Review and validate the specification information for accuracy to avoid discrepancies, redundancies, errors or omissions.
- Troubleshoot and communicate issues and suggested resolution with the project manager, product developer or manager.
- Work closely with the labeling/graphics management team.
- Take an active role in minimizing specification cycle time through reporting and follow up with WF reviewers.
- Execute multiple projects concurrently and efficiently.
- Provide recommendations to the Business for system and process improvements to the R&D Specification Management process.
- Identify system and process improvements; troubleshoot issues in data recording and documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry, with minimum 5 years experience or Bachelor’s Degree out of field plus 7 years experience working in a related role.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management platforms, such as, Selerant, SAP, SpecRight.
- Minimum 5 years experience directly with writing food product and/or material specifications.
- Understands the impact of various specification components on product quality, documentation requirements, and operational complexity.
- Must have the ability to manage 2-3 scientists within the Spec Management team
- Knowledge of ingredient functionality, packaging components and structures, analytical test methods and general food processing unit operations.
- Strong understanding of food and nutritional labeling, nutrition facts panel formatting and rounding, and FDA and USDA labeling regulations.
- Proficient computer skills in programs such as SharePoint, Excel, Word and SAP. Experienced user of Genesis or similar nutritional labeling software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to clearly communicate in a concise manner.
- Strong mathematical skills including unit of measure conversions and calculation of percentages.
- Must have excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Openly shares ideas and skills to build system knowledge and improve productivity with team members.
- Highly motivated, self-directing individual with ability to work in a fast paced environment.
- Must be detail oriented, able to apply logical reasoning, and demonstrate strong decision making skills.
