Description of Job
This position is located in CDOT's Region 1 North Engineering Program. Under the guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, this position provides entry-level engineering design and construction support for the unit and learns to apply engineering theories, principles, standards, and best practices.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Learn the project delivery process Scoping, Field Inspection Review, Final Office Review and Advertisement;
Learn to complete assigned design project tasks using engineering practices and calculation methods;
Learn to evaluate survey information, culvert reports, traffic studies, site conditions, and environmental constraints;
Learn to apply standards found in the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highway and Streets, the CDOT Design Guide, the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, and the State Highway Access Code;
Assist with coordinating with various other CDOT units to incorporate data and information into project design;
Learn to determine the most efficient and effective roadway geometry using software;
Learn to calculate quantities by material pay item and use those quantities and past production rates to estimate construction working days;
Learn to prepare construction plans and specifications;
Learn to generate the initial Cost Estimate of a Project;
Learn to assure contract compliance with plans and specifications by monitoring and documenting contractor's work;
Assemble data, calculations, figures, reports, and diaries for project records;
Learn to draft contract change orders, minor contract revisions, letters, and construction engineering memos;
Check calculations and tabulated quantities summarized in plans;
Learn to prepare and maintain design and construction schedules; keep milestone dates and construction drawdown schedules updated; analyze contractor schedules for resource problems and other issues;
Learn to review plans and specifications during planning reviews in the field to identify problems with constructability, potential claims for additional costs and delays, and negative impacts to the public, local industry, and environment;
Learn to approve materials, workmanship, and finished product when in compliance and assess appropriate payment reduction when not in compliance;
Learn to maintain official project records;
Attend training to develop and improve engineering skills;
Other job duties as assigned.
Primarily 8:00 am – 4:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office
Travel required during work hours throughout the Region, mostly Metro Denver/Front Range
Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
Required to operate CDOT vehicles
May work on project sites in variety of weather conditions and close to high-speed traffic

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering. Civil Engineering is preferred.
A copy of your transcript showing degree conferral must be submitted to verify this requirement.
Substitution: If you have recently completed your degree and your transcript does not yet show degree conferral, you must submit an official letter from the college or university's Engineering department stating that you have completed the program successfully and meet all requirements for degree conferral along with an unofficial transcript showing that all course work has been completed successfully. A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors, hereafter referred to as the Board, within three years of appointment to the position. Individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must also obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position.
Substitution: Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the bachelor's degree. If applying with the substitution, you must provide your Colorado Engineer Intern Number.
