Responsible for the management of the operational and personnel activities for the Professional Services Coding Unit of MPBS and has administrative responsibility and accountability for the management and direction of the operational and personnel activities of the coding area.
Bachelor’s Degree Preferred; CPC Certification Required. Consideration will be given to appropriate combination of education, training, and experience.
7 years of related experience, 4 years of progressive experience in professional coding, with 5 years of supervisory experience.
CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Comprehensive understanding of CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10, HCPCS, and CDT-2 coding; thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-9-CM/ICD-10 coding conventions and guidelines, data evaluation and analysis. Thorough understanding of and ability to utilize professional billing systems and correct coding criteria. Ability to plan, direct, and control employee workload and schedules.High level/professional verbal and written communication skills. Extensive knowledge of GE billing system preferred. Some knowledge of GE ETM and TES preferred. Excel skills required. Ability to work effectively under pressure in a deadline driven and production oriented workplace. Proven strong team building and interpersonal and customer service skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assumes personnel management for assigned department associate to include, but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating, promoting and terminating employees.
Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
Exemplifies Guest and Associate Relations standards in all activities in areas of service, resource utilization, high quality outcomes and effective communication and holds associate accountable for conformity with those standards in all activities.
Maintains in-depth level of knowledge in ICD-9-CM/ICD-10 coding and sequencing, CPT4/HCPCS coding for all professional specialties in accordance with Medicare Correct Coding guidelines. Is recognized as an expert in these areas by subordinates and peers.
Manages and coordinates coding compliance to ensure efficiency and quality.
Manages and coordinates the day- to-day activities of the coding area with emphasis on efficiency and quality.
Monitors coding edit activity and directs remediation effort for coding compliance issues.
Performs other duties as assigned. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
Performs qualitative and quantitative reviews of tasks performed within functional area to ensure compliance with Federal and state regulatory guidelines and institutional rules and regulations for quality assurance.
Professionally manages and conducts all aspects of operations and performance.
Responsible for coding quality initiatives by monitoring and reporting results to the Director.
