Full Job Description
HIAS is seeking an individual or firm to serve as an Interim CFO for a term of three months, with the possibility of extension. The CFO will serve as a hands-on financial leader with responsibility for broad oversight and protection of the assets of the organization and its related domestic and foreign funding. He/she will serve as a strategic business partner to the COO to collaboratively develop and implement systems and organizational structure to support of HIAS’ strategic plan.
The CFO will manage all financial aspects, including HIAS’ investments and audit activities. CFO responsibilities will also include overseeing cash flow planning, preparing and reviewing budgets and tracking operational metrics (KPIs.) To be successful in this role, you should have in-depth knowledge of risk management methods and the ability to create forecasting models.
The CFO will ensure management of resources in the most beneficial way and help maximize our impact. The CFO will assist the COO in assessing and identifying operational strategies, performance metrics and financial challenges and opportunities to meet the challenging demands of a diverse donor base and multiple currency management. This forward-leaning individual will also assure the financial viability of the organization through proactive analysis and sound administration of policies and procedures. Working closely with the COO this individual will work towards improving operational efficiency, meet the challenging demands of the changing landscape of multiple currency funding and geographies in which HIAS operates. He/ She will ensure excellence in world-wide operation to control all fiscal activities in numerous countries in an effective and efficient manner, while creating platforms that create opportunities to scale the organization.
Financial Statements and External Reporting
Oversees the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reports
Oversees the preparation of Form 990, and any other statutory reports for the agency
Provides financial guidance to management on budgetary controls, costs, pricing, cost estimating or other special assignments
Directs oversight of audit matters in consultation with the COO.
Builds infrastructure and systems, aligned with organizational goals, to support the timely and accurate reporting of financial results
Ensures global financial controls on all awarded funding
Ensures compliance with USG and Non-USG funding regulatory requirements
Complies with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings and ensures all returns are filed timely and accurately.
Formulates, recommends and implements sound fiscal policies, procedures and internal controls.
Planning & Budget
Directs annual budget process with support from the COO. Working closely with the COO, oversees short- and long-term financial health of organization
Evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s performance financial and risk objectives
Directs all key metrics and financial evaluations and reviews with COO
Strategic Orientation, ability to see beyond the numbers and serve as a true voice at the table amongst the Leadership Team regarding all strategic matters facing the organization.

Strong presence to lead discussions at all levels and across functional disciplines with an ability to explain complex information coherently.
Provides leadership to accounting personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts meetings to ensure that personnel are well informed of changes in programs, policies, and procedures.
Assists the COO and other members of the Executive Leadership Team (as required) with analysis and Board communication as needed.
Communicates fiscal policies and procedures to all HIAS employees.
Leads and participates in special projects that further the goals of the Finance Department.
Stays abreast of trends and changes in the accounting field.
Maintains the highest level of confidentiality regarding discussions and decisions made by Executive Leadership Team and takes all required actions to ensure that staff adhere to these requirements.
Strong academic credentials, including an advanced degree in finance or a related field, are preferred.
MBA highly desirable, CPA is a plus
15+ years of progressive financial accounting experience required
10+ years of experiencing managing USIAD and EU funding
5+ years financial leadership experience at Controller or above level
5+ years of experience implementing finance/ERP applications
Experience with accounting systems required
Proven work experience as a CFO, preferably in a nonprofit organization
Strong knowledge of data analysis, forecasting & financial modelling, investments, financial reporting, budgeting, audit, tax, strategic planning, internal controls, and risk management.
Knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
Strong analytical skills and ability to problem solve
Experience in managing or overseeing an international organization. Possesses the vision and skill to link business goals with enabling business strategies.
Long range planning and budgeting with a diversified donor base and multiple currency environment.
Facilitates changes by encouraging others to seek opportunities for new approaches to addressing problems and opportunities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to lead, develop and mentor staff during organizational development and transitions
Leader who ensures a productive working environment and confidently coaches and motivates employees to meet organizational goals
