Title: Summer Camp Counselor

Summary:
The acac Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for leading and supervising preschool, elementary, and middle school children who participate in acac's Summer Camp Program. He or she must follow all acac policies and procedures associated with this position and all Virginia Department of Social Services licensing standards at all times.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

Supervises and interacts with children in the summer camp program that promotes educationally and developmentally-stimulating programs and activities, which includes classroom time, outdoor/play time, and bus/transportation time
Maintains working knowledge of and follows VDSS licensing standards for child care at all times
Initiates interactions among children and communicates using a style that builds relationships and promotes teamwork
Demonstrates ability to anticipate the needs of children and parents and a willingness to help both within and outside the parameters of this position
Promotes the safety and security of all children at all times
Ensures group rotations happen smoothly and effectively
Maintains a notable visual presence during shift
When necessary, communicates program policies and expectations to students and/or parents to ensure a high level of safety and service at all times
Supervises children by maintaining appropriate student-to-counselor ratios and always being within sight and sound of students
Helps with group/classroom management
Helps create and plan daily activities and actively participates in all planned activities
Ensures assigned classroom or area is properly cleared and cleaned up at the end of the program per VDSS standards
Works with the acac team throughout the summer to efficiently maintain the highest standard of cleanliness throughout the facility while providing outstanding customer service to all children and parents
Helps train new staff when requested
Arrives to work in a timely manner with enough time to prepare for scheduled group
Greets campers and parents as they arrive and leave the program
Attends mandatory camp training

Though not a requirement to be a counselor, to qualify as a Lead Counselor, candidates must be at least 18 years of age, must have completed high school (or equivalent), and must meet ONE of the following requirements:

Hold an endorsement or Bachelor’s degree in a child-related field from a college or university, such as (but not limited to) elementary education, nursing, or recreation
Have three months of programmatic experience and at least one of the following education backgrounds:
a) A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours
b) A child development credential by an organization listed in 63.2-1738 of the Code of Virginia
c) A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization
Have six months of programmatic experience AND 24 hours of training related to the care of children, including but not limited to: child development, playground safety, health and safety issues, and preventing and reporting child abuse and neglect

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs the Essential Functions and Responsibilities as described (other duties may be assigned)
  • Remains competent in administering acac’s Emergency Action Plan and is alert and prepared for any emergency
  • Delivers outstanding service to members, guests, and fellow team members with friendliness, direct eye contact, and a pleasant demeanor at all times
  • If unable to work, proactively seeks substitutes for shifts and immediately informs supervisor of the substitution
  • Wears proper uniform at all times while at work and always presents the acac brand and standard anytime and anywhere the acac uniform is worn
  • Attends departmental meetings and any other meetings as requested
  • If not already certified, attends CPR and First Aid training provided by acac and maintains current CPR/FA certification for the duration of employment
  • Attends New Hire Launch within 30 days of employment
  • Promotes participation in the program and helps with marketing initiatives
  • Checks acac email daily
  • Ensures that time worked does not exceed 40 hours during the pay week (Sunday-Saturday); any overtime worked must be pre-approved by the supervisor
  • Reads, signs, and abides by the policies included in the Team Member Handbook
  • Parks in team member designated areas
  • Club cleanliness is an all-team responsibility; helps whenever necessary in any area of the club to keep club neat and clean
  • Helps with Service Day
  • Helps with acac programs, special events, or activities outside department
  • When supervisor or team members call or email, promptly returns contact
  • Exhibits a positive attitude at all times and upholds acac’s values of teamwork, customer service, and engagement
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; classes in childhood education and development may be considered in lieu of a degree as long as classes satisfy VDSS standards
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Competitive swim team experience
  • Must be available to work for the full summer camp season as outlined in the Job Description
  • Must be willing and able to attend the summer camp training week as outlined in the Job Description
  • To qualify as a Lead Counselor, must meet the requirements as described in the Job Description
  • Previous work experience and knowledge of VDSS licensing standards highly desired
  • Experience with summer camp programs and/or youth programming highly desired
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, pull, stretch, climb, and move for duration of shift
  • Must be able to participate in indoor and outdoor activities
  • Must be able to work professionally and calmly in an environment which may have heightened noise and stress
  • Must be able to work in warm and humid outdoor conditions
  • Must be able to work Monday - Friday
  • Willing and able to work additional hours, including weekends and evenings, based on the needs of the program and/or other youth programs
  • Must be able to pass a background check as required by Virginia Department of Social Services
  • Must have a genuine interest in working with and interacting with children
  • Willing and able to respond immediately and appropriately to multiple or unexpected situations or emergencies
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and able to diplomatically manage confrontation
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications a plus
  • Must enjoy working in a team environment
