The R&D Principal Scientist – Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and implementing proprietary process technologies and equipment for our manufacturing plants worldwide. Technologies can include; coating, extrusion, drying, mixing, molding, grinding and other continuous food processes. This position will support project leaders through all phases of project execution, from concept design, to scale-up, to commercialization and requires close collaboration with vendors and Pet Food plants and R&D personnel. He/she will be responsible for leading the creation, development, and qualification of new Transformative and Disruptive process innovation. He/she will connect internally and externally with appropriate technical thought leaders/experts to identify and develop solutions to technical challenges. In addition, this role will also be responsible for defining breakthrough process technology platforms and serve as a technical advisor to senior management & a technical mentor for junior associates.


Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of Chemical Engineering principles and its application in solving complex problems
Manage the complexity in food processing systems involving physical and chemical change, involving many time and length scales
Apply fundamentals of starch & protein transformation through critical processes (ex: extrusion, drying, baking, forming & sheeting) to develop innovative & functional pet foods & treats
Stay abreast with technical & engineering advances with in food & adjacent industries and reapply towards pet food innovation through iterative experimentations and reduction to practice
Uses existing & upcoming advanced analytics and tools to solve complex technical problems (e.g. Theoretical & computational modeling and design, IIoT, sensor technologies etc)
Lead & support process development through all scales for NPD initiatives in the JMS Pet Innovation Roadmap
Develop & maintain technical documentation: ex: Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), heat and material balances, FMEA, Risk Analysis etc.
Study process alternatives and develop preliminary cost analysis
Develop IP protection for the solutions to the most important Innovation challenges


A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Agricultural Engineering is required; and advanced degree is highly preferred

At least 10 years of process engineering experience is required
Prior experience in a chemical/food or other similar R&D or manufacturing environment is strongly preferred
Previous extrusion experience is required

Very good understanding of process equipment design including extruders, pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels etc. and a solid design understanding of sanitation systems
Recognized as the technical and hands-on expert / specialist in a field of [food] extrusion processing
Hands on experience with post-extrusion and other food processing operations (enrobing, coating, cutting, etc.)
In depth knowledge of design of experiments (DOE) and ability to perform data analysis of experimental results
Demonstrated broad and comprehensive expertise in leading-edge theories, techniques and/or technologies within food processing
Skilled at setting priorities & possess significant credibility with in peers & leaders in the organization
Good communication and computer skills
Self-starter with high level of results orientation & proven track record of acquiring proficiency in new technologies quickly
