Position Summary

Columbia University's Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (Zuckerman Institute) supports interdisciplinary neuroscience research and discovery by scientists and scholars across the university and promises to be the most comprehensive institute for brain science. Located in a state-of-the-art facility, world class researchers are brought together to transform our understanding of the brain and mind.

The Zuckerman Institute is seeking a flexible and highly motivated individual to serve as part-time Research Staff Assistant in neural data analysis at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience. The goal of the Center is to establish, through the quality of the research, the excellence of its trainees, and the impact of its visitor, dissemination, and outreach programs, a new cooperative paradigm that will move neuroscience to unprecedented levels of discovery and understanding. The group will ensure mentoring of the trainee in terms of learning to use state-of-the art software and data analysis techniques and in terms of research and career in modern neuroscience. The PI will guide the trainee in the choice of analysis method but the trainee will be welcome to develop or use alternative methods. The PI will coordinate the project in collaboration with the trainee.

This position is responsible for supporting the Center’s computational expertise.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities includes but are not limited to the following:

Analyze populations of simultaneously recorded neurons in the mouse visual cortex. The research project will include:
Preprocessing calcium imaging data and videos of the behaving mice using state-of-the-art software.
Determine physiological properties of neurons using modern neuroscience techniques.
Perform advanced data analysis, including machine learning methods, to interpret the analysis of populations of neurons.
Read scientific literature relevant to the research project;
Participate to group meetings and internal seminars;
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI).
Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in the sciences or related field. Must be interested in acquiring lab skills or have prior lab experience. Must possess strong quantitative and programming skills and have a familiarity with MATLAB and/or Python.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess strong quantitative skills (e.g. programming, computer science, physics, mathematics, biophysics) and strong motivation to learn new skills and knowledge. Knowledge in neuroscience is preferable but not required. In addition, the finalist will possess sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation from the immediate team to the broader institute.
